Here are two portraits (candid, not 'posed') i took at a party.

Here is grandma (not mine). She did not like her first picture (i showed it on my LCD). I took a second one. She thought that one was funny:

Camera is D200; Lens is a 10.5mm fish-eye; SB600 flash used; Very close-up. This gives a funky effect. Only the top half of the picture is lit by the flash. I shot a whole bunch or candid portraits like this.

This picture is of the grandchild. She was just silly:

C&C welcome.
Thanks!

I can't grasp the notion of time.

When I hear the earth will melt into the sun,
in two billion years,
all I can think is:
"Will that be on a Monday?"

The grandmother shot has a lot more interest and character. In fact it is a very good photograph from every angle, while the second photo is more of a explosive snap shot.

Thanks Ted! :D I've seen your pics. They are great.

I agree, the second one was snapped, literally. She just walked by and the 'setup' was less than a second :D But i just love those eyes and the missing teeth.

That first shot is very good, I really like it and your B/W conversion is spot on.

    Thanks!
I used Nikon Capture NX for post-processing this file.

For the conversion i used one of its Filters for B/W conversion. Instead of 3 channels it has a 'hue' slider, which accepts values between 0 and 360 (degrees). Specifying 60, skin tones are the lightest. Higher values give a darker more contrasty skin (gritty look). Over 300, the skin-tones get lighter again. Besides that, its contrast and brightness slider can be used as well. Best to use these two in moderation.
