Feature Request: custom watermark

I find the giant PROOF that goes on top of photos to be a bit much. A simple website address going diagonally across the photo would do for me, so here was what I was thinking. There could be a custom watermark where you type the text you want to appear, select a font size, and it gets put diagonally across the photo. Would this be complicated to make?

I know how to do it in Photoshop, but I don't want it to show up in prints that people order.

I second that (with some alterations)

It can be simply a (mostly transparent) custom "watermark" image user can provide, which smugmug would simply superimpose instead of standard PROOF one. This way smugmug would use the same technique they are using now, only the image would be custom. It can be either per gallery (extra option: WatermarkURL) or can simply reside in account/cobranding settings. I believe, cobranding and watermark both are PRO-only features, so it would make sense to put this custom watermark up there, along with possible specification where would it go (Random, LeftTop, DeadCenter, RightBottom, etc.), if this is not too much to ask, otherwise dead center or random is ok.

    Just my $.02..

'gus - the point of the smug watermark is that you can upload yer original (no watermark) pics, and the -S, -M and -L pics that you display for people have the watermark applied by smugmug.

i second the request for user-definable watermarks! bring it on!

Oh...well...i can lift heavy stuff & all.

Would this be suggested for the 'pro' subscribers or the run of the mill shooters ?

    Good idea i think.

How about just a watermark that says "fish"? Would that work? Sure...I thought so. nod.gif

    Custom Watermark Suggestion
I think it would be a great thing to have. I'm not sure what technology smugmug is using for watermarking now. But I think it would be easy to implement something like this (using open source GD graphics library for example):

Allow Pro users to upload a greyscale or B/W (2 color) image with their water mark and just apply to images instead of proof word, that currently implemented. So just like a layer mask in photoshop, black will be transparent and white will be visible or semitransparent. This way we will be able to use our studio logo's as watermark, web address or anything you can come up with.

I would settle for just being able to change the opacity of the existing one, if your suggestion isn't easily implemented. I had to stop watermarking entirely because proofs can't be sufficiently evaluated for ordering.

As always, thanks for the requests. :) As most of you know.. quite a large number of features on the site come from user requests like these.

As for custom watermarks, it is definitely something we would love to add. It is on our to-do list for sure. But I do know it is a very big engineering feat, and I have no idea how far up the priority list it is.

How's that for an ambiguous answer? rolleyes1.gif

would an opacity slider be easier? Or a chosen percent? Like 30% instead of the existing 60+ (guessing)?

He said that 8 months ago, and we still don't have it, as such I would say it's a little low on the list. :D BTW, I still want it.

I want it! At least let me put frelow.smugmug.com there so when people decide to use my pics anyway, people seeing it can know where it came from!

    Advertising baby! ;)

It's not that it's low on the list, it's that everyody was so clearly demanding the ability to map their photos!!!

    They were, weren't they... ? headscratch.gif

    still hoping, waiting, praying....

    just saw the response above...

difficult task? shame it can't be as easy as adding it to the gallery tools pull-down, like :this is me for the bio photo....one could upload a logo, and select it for custom watermark...perhaps havea few options like small, many times, small one time, etc....
