Well, good lens fast camera. The 1D MKll in an incredibly fast cam,70-200mm L is a fast lens in conjunction with AI servo and continuous shots these (rats) don't stand a chance.(8.3 fps)
My lovely assistant also GF tossing bread and they come close. I think of it as my machine gun:D
Manual mode ISO 400 F8 shutter speed varies somewhere around 1/2000-1/2500 sec.Shot in raw and normal post processing.
Great gull shots ^5 Frozen in motion, is about the only time they look good...lol
Plus, I hope you were far enough away that they didn't "bomb" you or your assistant That "throwing bread into the air" technique, is a great tip for shooting these guys.
If you're like me, you'd rather shoot an exotic waterfowl, or maybe even a bird of prey. But, if gulls is what's available, gulls are what ya shoot :-) If only they weren't so darn noisy.

John,
I'm in Northern California and many times I have to be satisfied with gull shots, too :cry Still, they can look good and they're good practice for that day when an eagle swoops over your head

Wow Greaper Nice images.
I dont see any birds like that here near Cincinnati except for an owl or distant hawk or an occasional heron.
Did you luck out or what?
Maybe I need to get my eyes checked.

I am afraid to see what critters you have over there in the wastland... I still have bad dreams about the spider in your shed.......
Mate that one was a baby...been raining here for 7 flamin' days (it never does that..best rain in 10 years) & all the wildlife is heading for high ground big time. Im in the bush looking for a powerline fault & find a fuse box hiden in some trees...i walked over & opened it to do some tests.
Now im standing testing a live 3 phase board, everything including me is soaking.. when the biggest huntsman ..maybe 6" across comes flying out from behind the fuses & runs up my arm. Time stood still ..im torn between electrocution if i flinch or letting it run further to bite me on the face.
All i could think off was.."how do i get him to stay around whilst i run back & get the camera from the truck." Its a sickness alright.

You should hang out with me, MHJS. Just outside my office, I've got hawks, herrons and gulls. They're freakin' taking over.

I find it hard to believe their aren't preserves or parks on the Ohio River that attract lots of water fowl.
I will look into it and see if I cant suggest spots.
