Lake Basin, Wallowas - OR

We often go hiking in the Wallowa mountains in the summer. The backpacking is amazing in the wilderness area. We have been to the lake basin area before, but we tried a new route in this time.

The Blue mountains to the north have a huge wildfire burning so the haze in some of the pictures is from the smoke.

We hiked in 6 miles uphill the first day. The poor dog got tired really fast.

The first night we camped in Six Mile Meadow. Beautiful in the daylight or at night.

We walked up a steep grade the second day to get to the lake basin area. This is Horseshoe lake. Possibly one of the best of the lakes simply because as you walk around the lake you can see five or six different mountains over the lake.

I took this picture on the way back down on the third day. The mountain shown is actually Eagle Cap, the most famous mountain in the range. This picture is from a very different angle than most photos of the peak.

We walked about nine miles out on the last day. We only stopped a few times, once for the picture above, once for the waterfall below, and once when the dog sat down in the trail and refused to walk any farther. :D

Of course he was tired, you made him carry all your gear!

Very good series, thanks for posting.

Well to clarify he was only carrying his food, water, and treats. Clearly we packed too many treats for him.

    Thanks for looking. :):
