Garbage Collector

This is one of my first pictures using a 35mm camera about 18 years ago when I used to live in Brazil. There social pictures (I believe a variant of street scene) are very popular, well, because there are a lot of strong social themes.

This photo was taken after a "feira livre", a type of farmer's market. Very few people go to grocery stores to buy groceries, they go to these street fairs that always happen on the same days on the same street. Luckily, this one happens on the street my mother had a drugstore (the picture was taken from inside the drugstore) and it happens every Sunday.

It is a very peculiar place, filled with tents and booths selling things like lettuce, tomatoes, meat, fish and so on. Usually there are three rows of tents, one on each side of the street and another in the middle of the street, which leaves two narrow corridors along the street for the people. Unnecessary to say that the place is crowded with ladies carrying bags and carts full of groceries and the unforgettable noise of salesmen screaming trying to literally sell their fish.

When the fair is over, it is a big dump of left overs. Rotten tomatoes, squeezed bananas and fish heads are disputed between the garbage collectors trying to do their job and the starving homeless people, trying to make a meal. That is exactly the moment this picture was taken.

I know a good photo doesn't need explanation. My intention was to write a brief description before sharing this photo here for your apreciation, but nostalgia took me over, and I actually felt good writing and remembering the noises and smells.

All that said, do you have any comments?

Have you ever heard of a Zenit XP12 camera? That's the one I used in this photo.
