Andy, this is freaking cool!!
It's like, going for the smugmug shootout and having only one card:-)
Pretty amazing, but I'm not going to get too excited. Every time there is a new breakthrough in memory or disk capacity, it coincides with some new application requirement that consumes the added space. In the end, you always need more memory and you never have enough disk space for long.
Imagine not only having a CF card of that size but the fact that it is also a portable/perm computer drive...i suspect our old whiring hard drives are looking at the sun setting.
I'd bed true flash memory-based storage is still a fair way off from the mainstream; it'll eventually happen, but there's some major stumbling blocks to overcome yet. The current NAND flash memory technology has a life span of around 100K cycles before it dies, which is appreciably short. Imagine doing something like defraging your disk (or worse - self-defraging systems like Linux) or saving a 100MB+ Photoshop file every few minutes and knowing that you're shortening the life of your hard drive each time you do so...
That is really cool. But it would suck if the card would break, you'd lose soo many images! But I think its great we're still finding new ways to fit more in small spaces. Go samsung!
Yikes... I have been pretty happy using 4g cards, as I usually dump them down to my computer every evening while shooting an event. It would be nice to have a few larger cards, but I think I am more excited at the 4g and 8g cards becoming much cheaper.
Don't forget people use flash memory for other things besides taking pictures. I use CF for all of my live audio taping...at 24/96khz an hour of music takes up nearly 2gbs - having a 64gb CF card would mean I could record a whole weekend festival on one card and not have to worry once about running out of room.
The downfall - the transfer time when you're done.
bored? check out my photo site...and if you have the time, leave a comment or rate some pictures while you're there.
Canon 20D | Canon 17-40mm f/4L USM | Tamron 28-75 f2.8 XR Di LD IF | Canon 50mm f/1.8 II | Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L USM
Although the thought is tempting, I guess I am too old school too eggs in one basket for me. Maybe if I had a 22MP camera or that 39MP Blad I would look closer at this... but for now too much of a good thing.
This is a great card / price ......when I bought my 2 I paid just under $80 each and that was on sale.......and I have had no probs of any kind....they have served me well....................
Going back to Richard's post, well he was prescient. I can see a use for these monsters now if you have a 1Ds Mk III. For the rest of us with 8-12 MP, not so much still.

An article about the practicality of purely flash-based storage: http://www.overclockers.com/tips00771/
(better up the memory on my PC...think 8GB is enough?)
