My fiance bought me the Digital Rebel XT before our trip to Hawaii. Here are some of the first photos I took. I'm not real pleased with how most of them turned out but I do have a lot to learn about the camera. Used the standard lens kit.

    Welcome to Dgrin!

I use to rebel xt , and have learned to set a custom white balance, and all the photos I use , are edited in adobe photoshop.

Also, I never use the Auto settings on the camera.
This works for me, others will give great ideas as well.
    Goood Luck

    :D
    Revised:
These photos didnt show earlier- they look good, I agree with botanist.
    Thankyou

    They look good :)

If you're going to be shooting alot of water/sky shots (like you did in HI) you might want to look into a Circular Polarizer. Maybe you used one, hard to tell, but it will make the image 'pop' quite a bit more and you can control the intensity of the blues much easier. :)

    Keep shooting!

I didn't use one, but will definately look into one. I'm also considering upgrading the lens, but not exactly sure which way to go. Will be shooting mainly landscapes etc...

    lots of opinions there.

I'd stick w/ a 17-55/17-85 (i'm a nikon guy so forgive the canon ignorance :() for now. 17 is plenty wide enough for most of what you want to do in the beginning. I didn't upgrade to a 10-20mm until after over a year and a half! No reason really. And now that I have it...I almost wish I hadn't lol. The 10-20 is very picky about angles and exposure....

anywho, keep practicing :): And you can get a Cir Pol filter for dirt cheap these days. thumb.gif

I love the 17-40 f4 L for landscapes and you did great for using the kit lens! very good. are you coming off a point and shoot cam? ever use a dslr before? its a whole new experience and like some has already said, use a CP filter.. works like a charm... also, a good Neutral Density filter (graduated ND) is also a great filter to have.

I am coming off using a Canon SD100. I've never used a DSLR before.
