Thinking......
I've seen some very excellent samples from this lens.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

The lack of IS/VR limits the appeal of both of them to me. The longer the focal length, the more useful IS/VR becomes. Shooting t 800mm without IS, will require a very high level of expertise to avoid camera shake - probably two tripods with sand bags, MLU, yada yada yada.

No I would really like it for field sports, but those don't make me the money that Weddings do.....

The 300-800 is 2 lbs heavier but it does have a shorter minimum focusing distance (19.6' v 23'). If I got one of thoses lenses I wouldn't need the range of the zoom. It would be for specific situations and I would have a second body available for shorter ranges.
My 500 doesn't have VR and that has had no impact on my shooting. Since 99.9% of my shoots with the 500mm are done with some form of support the lack of VR is not a deal buster in any way.
I have a friend who shoots with an 800 and he uses two tripods (one for the body and one for the lens) and he uses a remote to trigger the shutter release. This is not a set-up for drive-by shooting.

If you get this lens, Andy will just get the:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EF_1200mm_lens
... and then you'll get the Zeiss 1700mm, f4 ...
Where does all the madness end?
(I'm looking forward to your images after you convince the "better half".)

I would love to see Andy buy that lens. I would pay good money just to see him lug around a 36 lb. piece of glass. Then there would be all that fun when he tries to sell it. :lol
I'm still trying to sell myself on that lens. Once I get myself sold I will start working on my much better half.

I'll call Linda tomorrow. You place the order while she's on the phone
We'll talk Jack Stack BBQ.
Seriously, that's a nice piece of glass and if you can swing it, that'd
definitely be the end of your drive by days
