to repair my D2h. I had sent it out to them when I got laid up. When I got the estimate I wasn't sure it would be worth it to approve the repairs because I use my D2X most of the time and I expect Nikon to come out with an upgrade for the D2Hs in the next year.

Being laid up I had some time to catch up on my post work and I had a bunch of shot from last November that I taken with the D2H.

I gave Nikon the OK to repair the camera.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

With such pics it's not difficult to decide what to do.

    :wow Great shots.

Unless there is some compelling reason to upgrade, I'd stay with what you are obviously comfortable with.

Nice series of shots Harry. Too bad about the camera. You've not had good luck with your 2 Nikon bodies , having had to send them in for repair. Hope your luck with your gear changes. A day without your camera is like a day without sunshine, rock 'n' roll, food, booze and women. :cry :cry :cry

Thanks Ian. The D2H is a great camera and I have always enjoyed shooting with it and its AF is a tad faster than the D2X. The 2H is great for flight shots. Also its a joy to work with its 4 MB files when I'm post processing my shots.

I love my D2Hs and wish I had a D2H for a 2nd digital body for some wide angle shots.. In pricing used ones, $400 seems like a steel... I think you made a really good decision.

..by the way, really nice shots. thumb.gif

Thanks Ric. There might be a reason to upgrade in a year or so but no good reason right now. I'll be sticking with the D2H as my back-up body.

    Hey Jeff,

I can always make the $400 back if I sell the D2H. The D2Hs is a fine camera but not that much better than the D2H to get to move up. I'm waiting for the D3H.

What's wrong with your D2H? Mine went back too, but Nikon covered everything. There was a recall for a problem with exposure metering. Mine went to Mack warranty first and they then sent it on to Nikon. If you're having trouble with it overesposing everything, it's probably the same thing and they should be repairing it free of charge. If this is the case, let me know and I'll dig up the web page on the recall.

When mine went in I bought a D200 which I love, but the files are massive. Processing images from the D2H is definitely much more pleasurable. I'm now looking at investing in a dual core machine to speed up my procesing time when working with the D200.

This is the D2H's 3rd trip to Nikonland. The first two were just for the exposure issue and were repaired for free. This time it was both a focusing issue and an exposure issue. Also the shutter release was a tad sticky. It had been over a year since the last repair and the D2H was no longer under warranty. I had a good talk with the Nikon folks before I agreed to the charge. They aren't charging to correct the exposure issue but only for the other issues.

I upgraded my PC's RAM to 2 gig but the D2Xs files are still a bit slow to process but it just spits out the D2Hs files. :D

Wow Harry - at the current exchange rate, $400 translates to R3000 (our funny money down here) BUT R3000 buys 300 beers at the local pub headscratch.gif That's scary... :wow

    Great shots though!

Thanks Mike. Actually the 2H is the only body I have had problems with. I got a D2X lemon from B&H but once that got replaced there hasn't been a problem. Fortunately my cameras have been down only one at a time so Ihaven't had to go without.

Thanks. I just love the D2 series body. When I decided to upgrade from the D2H I tried out the D200 first but it just didn't have the D2 feel so I went with the D2X.

Hopefully when it comes back it will be about as good as new. What current model camera do you think you could purchase for $400 that would be anywhere near as good as your D2H?

Thanks Eric. Actually my post processing on my shots are quite minimal. I'm a follower of Ron Reznick where the emphasis is on nailing the shot out of the camera with accurate expsoure and white balance. Once you got that there really isn't much to do in your post work.

None of course. The decision was to repair the D2H or to wait on the expected D2H upgrade from Nikon an dput the repair $ to that. But I needed a high speed back-up to my D2X (my D100 just wasn't cutting it) now and I can always sell the D2H when and if Nikon comes out with the D3H.
