First, thanks to all who commented on the first series of mushy images that I posted - I appreciate the feedback.
Here a some of the ground-dwellers that I got this summer, some in NM and some in CO.

One side makes you small,

one side makes you tall

and the ones that mother gives you, don't do anything at all
(but they do taste excellent - apologies to Jefferson Airplane)

Some are like families

And some are luminous loners

    Hey there Tom,
You make wonderful use of the light, your mushies are beautifully lit clap.gif
This is a great series, they look so delicate, and you have portrayed them so well with your photos, very nicely done Tom .... Skippy (Australia)

I like the lighting on these. Are you using flash?

    Nice shroom series
That last one with the pink and lighting is way cool. I like the angles at which these were shot....hmm....laundry day?

Thanks Skippy, Ian, Schwartzy, Tristan, and Awais.

I used the SB-800 flash as a remote and the D200 in commander mode on most of them. In fact, you can see the black flash body laying in top of the shroom in the last shot.

Love the freedom that the Nikon flash system has built in. No need for RC units for shots like these. Just put the camera on a tripod, set timed shutter release, and hand-hold the flash in position.

BTW - that middle one is Boletus Edulis (aka King Bolete or Porcini), the only edible species I can ID. But they are a treat to eat, and can be found above 9,000 in the spruce forests here. When luck is with you.
