I'm not sure about this one. Is it okay, or does he look like he's squatting for a doo doo? LOL When I try a b/w conversion the colors in the sweater are difficult, some looking a bit IR and distracting.

I thought we could do a little photoshop practice here?

I converted the color to B&W and played around.

Some curve and exposure adjustments and it's getting better, I think. I got some of the face to come back but the sweater is really hot. The detail is there, ya just need to play with it some more.

I think it was my processing in RAW that blew it. Here's a toned down sooc version (straight out of camera).

Yep...exposure is the single most important thing to get right in RAW.

Love that second try...the blacks are black and the color is very rich. I think it may be darker than I would have done but I think it adds to it!

to me, the most striking about this photo is the face, particularly the eyes-

think about cropping real close on the face, especially if you're having difficulties with the rest of the pic-

I love the little guy's face! great job!

I've only *just* started reading up on b&w conversions, so this would be a good post to make a small personal hijack :D This is what I came up with. It's not as 'bright' as the other conversions, but i had a hard time keeping his cheeks from getting blown. His sweater changed colors a bit, because of the conversion.

Thanks for all the plays!!! This might be one of those tricky conversions that require blending of 2 or 3 versions. I love the sweater Ivar got, with the red registering as black...but the eyes, not so much. ;)

I dunno..i recon you nailed it here. Its sharp as i think a good B&W should be. There is a quality in that shot..his cheeks & jumper (sweater you call them i think headscratch.gif ) has great tones. Then again my opinions dont usually match others but i like it anyway...its a great family album keeper thumb.gif Its got a 'bright' quality to it.

    Thank you Gus!

Ivar, I'm not sure how you adjust "calcuations" in PS? is it in CS2? Gradient map is another good one sometimes.

    Image >> Calculations.

Select the Red Channel for #1 and Green Channel for #2. Set Opacity somewhere between 65-85%

    :) Easy.

    my version.
"A photo is like a hamburger. You can get one from McDonalds for $1, one from Chili's for $5, or one from Ruth's Chris for $15. You usually get what you pay for, but don't expect a Ruth's Chris burger at a McDonalds price, if you want that, go cook it yourself." - me
