external links or easy sharing?

I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction.

What is the difference between "external links" within security and privacy and "easy sharing" within social?

I would like to be able to post photos on forums but dont want visitors to my galleries to be able to do this. Which of the above would be the best choice, or are they both the same with different wording?

I've searched all the FAQ's but to be honest they're very vague on this matter.

Thanks a lot.

    Hi Happytraveller.

The basic answer is neither of the two will work for what you are trying to do If you can link it, others can link it. If others can't link it, you can't link it.

External links will allow posting in forums, blogs etc (when you embed a link as www.smugmug.com/photo/1234567-O.jpg)

Easy sharing is the link below the photo saying "share photo: links, forums, blogs" and takes you to a page showing the links such as above.

I hope this helps, if you need any further assistance, holler!

    Thanks for the reply Ivar.

I had hoped this wasn't the case. Would it not be preferable for the gallery owner to have this option without giving away control to anyone who happens along. One more for the wish list!

    Kind regards,

    In a perfect world...

What you might consider is turning off external linking for the galleries you don't want strangers to be able to link to, then for the images you specifically want to externally link, make a separate gallery and password protect it, even hide it by making it private also if you don't want it cluttering up your look, then just externally link from within that inaccessible gallery. You could also likely just hide the text/link that reads: "Share this photo: blogs, blah, blah" so external linking would still be on, but few would know how to access it/obtain the links.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers Steve,

I vote for the perfect world!

Thanks for your sugestions, I have both turned off at the mo'. As for setting up different galleries with different permissions, well that does seem an awfully long winded way of just being able to show a particular photo on say a forum.

I'm no programmer, so is it too difficult to have these permissions solely for the one who is logged in?

It's really easy. Just create a new gallery, say "My Blog Photos" or something, make the gallery private and set a password (that you'll never have to enter again, since you'll be logged in as the account owner, and it'll give you instant access. Others would have to enter this password to get into the gallery, but of course you wouldn't give out that password). If you come across a photo in your regular galleries that you want to post to a forum/blog, just go to photo tools, and "Make 2nd copy" and toss it into your private gallery, and link it from there.

The other method of leaving external linking turn on in a public gallery, but removing the text telling how to link them, would involve a little bit of coding at the Power/Pro user level. If that's an option, let us know and we'll figure it out for you.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot, that doesn't sound too bad at all. I'll give it a go.

Thanks for the offer on the coding but I'm on a standard account. That will save you from hurting your brain!

I'll go with your first suggestion, and thanks again.
