Smoke, Soot And Sunsets

The Day Fire, one of the largest wildfires in S. California's history is still claiming huge areas of forest land north of Los Angeles. The Day Fire, (started by accident on Labor Day) already has consumed nearly 200,000 acres. Over 4,200 firefighters are on the front lines of the blaze, trying to keep it away from populated areas on the Los Angeles-Ventura County border. It's costing more than a million dollars a day to bring under control.

The fire has made for some interesting sunsets this past month. I was on my way home from work and couldn't pass up dashing to a pre-determined vantage point to shoot this day's offering. I whipped out my wide angle for a view of the city, but the sunset was too far and the outcome was unimpressive. I switched to a telephoto and the results were entirely different. With the smoke and the rapidly disappearing sun, the changes were dramatic and interesting.

1st shot the sun is barely visible with a wide angle

Love the last ones. Reminds me of the old Jim Morrison line "...bloody red sun of fantastic LA." Guess that dates me a bit. Don't trust anyone over 70. rolleyes1.gif

Thanks Richard! Jim Morrison may be dead, but his music and lyrics still live on today, so I don't think quoting him would date anyone!

Fires are great for sunsets saurora & you certainly got your moneys worth there. Many years ago Mt Pinatubo erupted in the philippines & we got months & months of sunsets down here with that depth of red as you caught.

    Very nice !

    Susan,

#3 does it for me. It's really amazing to see the effect a change of perspective can make in a photograph.

Thanks for sharing. I've learned another lesson from you and I really appreciate it.

Ya, that last one really does it for me! My g/f lives in Riverside and has been telling me the sunrises/sunsets out there have been really incredible lately due to all the haze and the fires

Thanks Gus...I waited all summer to catch a sunset from that site...of course, with no rain our summers are pretty cloudless. Unfortunate to have a fire, needless to say, but everyday brings a new sunset. Today was much clearer....the fire must be more under control with the rain over the weekend and this morning.

Thanks, Scott...I learned something new myself! I kept thinking "wide angle" but it just put the sunrise too far off in the distance!
