Shoot with RAW and Batt power

Is it just me or does shooting in RAW use more batt power? :scratch
I have extra power batts for my 10D with a grip.
2 batts usually last me a long time.
The other day I went out and after only shooting about 50 shots my batts were dead.
RAW uses more batt power or are my batts about whipped? :dunno

I never heard of this before.
Sounds like batteries taking a dump.

A 10D should get at least 500 frames per charge, unless you are shooting time exposures like 30 seconds or so, or are using IS lenses heavily.

Try recharging your batteries and see how you do again.

I have bought batteries online from SterlingTek.com

Yes been using my Sigma EX DG APO OS 80-400mm quite a lot.
IIRC they are SterlingTek batts I got NEW this time last year.
    Maybe charged 8-10x.

    *****Correction*****

They were some sort of aftermarket batts I got with the camera when I purchased it. rolleyes1.gif

The format being saved cannot possibly have any effect on the batteries. Sounds like they are going on you.

Using your Sigma EX DG APO OS 80-400mm lens is most likely the culprit. I know my battery life is going to be shorter when I use mine. Same for my Canon 28-135mm IS lens.

not to be picky but surely it does mke some difference?

If I take my photos at medium quality jpeg my camera has to process and write X amounts of data to the mem card.

If I take my photos at RAW with large JPEG my camera has to process and write more data to the card? so that will use more power?

or am i missing something obvious?

Arguably it will require more juice, the files sizes are larger and therefore card accesses for both writing and reading will take longer, I wouldn't have thought it would be that noticeable though.

Yeh fair point I guess the processor and writing moving from 4% of energy use to 4.2% wouldnt make much difference in the real world.

personally I haven't noticed any difference with my 7D...I get around 500 shots with Raw or my best Jpg setting......I seem to use more memory than battery........

With my Canon 20D, Canon 75-300mm IS writing RAW only to a 6GB Microdrive I get at LEAST 600 shots and that was with using popup flash fulltime. I use a 430EX/580EX now so that extends it. I can't really comment on if RAW uses more or less than HQ JPEG, because I have never, ever depleted a full battery in one day's shooting. I'd have to say your batteries are going.

I have had this happen on my 20d. In my case it was from the grip contacts not making full contact. Two fully charged batteries showed as requiring a charge! Do the following... leave the grip on, remove the batteries. Make sure the grip is securely attached. Insert the batteries. I find if you insert the grip with the batteries in it, it somehow confuses the cameras knowledge of the batteries charge state.
