Did I describe that well enough. sunset & no tripod. 5.6f at 300mm

I was thrilled that it didn't fly away at the first sight of me.

Nice light and head turn in the first. BTW it's a Great Blue Heron.

I like the second one better, but can't quite place my finger on why. Maybe it's the "evening like" light.

I agree with Nick about the light and the head turn.

One of the secrets in shooting birds in this low angled light is being patient ( hoping they don't loft first ) and waiting to shoot until they turn their head into the light, rather than having their head in the shadows. I think that is why the first shot is better than the second.

GBH's are notorious for having a large flight radius.

I mean that here in Indiana, and Illinois as well, that GBH's rarely will let you get within a 100 yard radius before they up and fly away.

You may occaisionally find an exception, but listen to the posters here on dgrin who are from the Midwest.

Florida GBHs are much more tolerant of tourists for some reason. But up here where I live, the GBHs are wild, and spook very easy.ne_nau.gif

Nice shots Dave! thumb.gif If you can deal with the extra weight, bring the tripod it'll make a huge difference especially with a subject that isn't moving too much. On the first image I like that the subject and background are nicely separated. On the second image I like that there is enough light on the shadow side of the GBH to still see some of the feather detail.
