I normally give BH and Adorama props for staying true to thier religious holidays but this sucks. They are closed for a week, much longer than any previous time I have seen. I need a .6 ND filter for my 17-40 and they are closed.....where else can I go? I have been looking at other places this morning and none have what I need....which sucks.

**Edited to remove some things that werent fully developed thoughts and to clarify some things that may have been written in a slightly more agitated state :uhoh**

With the exception of my first transaction with them, I have had very good results with www.digitalfotoclub.com

The first transaction was a problem with communication and just took a little effort to get cleared up. You can see their resellerratings.com rating here. I can't explain the recent down-turn in their score - YMMV.

I've also heard good things about www.sigma4less.com I've never dealt with them, but many DGrinners have and have had good things to say about them. Their resellerrating is found here.

Yeesh, c'mon man, give B&H a break, and use Google, and common courtesy. I HATE B&H bashing. It's rampant on photography forums, and unnecessary. They are observant Jews. That does not "blow."

    www.2filter.com is a great source.

I have never used them, but these folks have B+W filters:

If you're looking for inexpensive (again I never used them, so I don't have any experience with them):

Why stop giving props now? Because it affects you directly? Glad to see that Andy and Ziggy posted alternatives for you. But I'm with Andy.

Hey folks re-read the first post. I have always supported thier right to thier days off and it hasnt stopped me from making every single one of my purchases through them, but I just got taken for a loop with the whole week off thing. Adorama is the same way for this week as well. I spent an hour scouring through many different sites amazon, ritz, wolf, I even grabbed a photo mag from the car (im at work) and looked through the back. I found the filterhouse site but thier resellerratings isnt that good so I was weary. Again folks put the pitchforks down because though im a bit frustrated its not like im never going to do business with them again, im just going out of town next weekend and kinda wanted it for then. Thanks for the links. Let me check it out.

EDIT: Thanks Andy I went with 2filter. :-)

Yeah, sometimes B&H's being closed sucks. But I respect that they've
committed to their religious belief and not the all-mighty dollar.

Why not give your local camera shop a try?

You've made a very accurate observation. It happens every time B&H closes for a religious holiday. I've seen it repeatedly on fredmiranda also. Well, it's their business model. If it makes someone unhappy, they should just avoid B&H rather than publically airing their dirty laundry.

As a non-observant Jew I appreciate your remarks Andy. It always strikes as ironic when non-jews feel put out by Jewish Holidays. Try looking for a place to eat on Christmas Eve and then we can chat about it.

Well, I've known the OP for a while, and I know he was just frustrated - no bashing there from him. But I'm constantly amazed at the anti-BH threads over on other forums, when they do close. I'm extra sensitive to it, as my wife is Jewish - yay, we celebrate ALL the holidays here, Easter, Passover, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Succot, Hannukah and Christmas :D And let me tell you: my wife makes a mean brisket thumb.gif

If you're looking for B+W or Hoya filters, I'd look at www.maxsaver.net prices beat all others. Yes, they're legit, yes the filters are the real thing. Many over on FM have used them and I have another order in with them as I type.

I find the B&H bashing pretty silly & selfish. Heck, they even give lots of warnings of what their hours are, so it's no surprise. I noticed this weekend while "window shopping" they now provide a countdown until they re-open. If you really want that item RIGHT NOW, just go to the local shop, then you can go home with the new toy rather than have to wait & whine about UPS too. Are we really all that spoiled these days? Before anyone takes personal offense, those comments were directed in general, not at anyone specific. :hide

Yes at least B&H gives proper warning in the form of pop-up windows (best use of pop-ups I've seen yet) to make sure you realize their close hours.

But I think if you feel the need to bash, you should be able to bash. I mean, it is your freedom of speech and not others. I dont think anyone should tell you you cant rant about what you want to rant about. However, I dont think the person who initialized the thread was really bashing them.

www.2filter.com is a great site. i ordered all of my IR gear from them. try to order more than 50 bones, that way you can get free shipping. buy yourself some dust blowers and lens cleaners!

Anyway, I wanna' pick up a lens from B&H soon (thank goodness for bill-me-later). I dont mind waiting. ;)

Oh..and about the comment on dinner on Christmas eve, pffft, go cook for yourself! lol

Anything with a pound of MSG will make any food a good (in the beginning) and bad (after you're done) experience.

I think it's actually a CSS-DIV trick. But, yes, it's the best use of a pop-up type of thing I've seen.

Yep, and we all have the same right to pile on the basher if we feel the need to. Isn't freedom of speech fun? :D I'd classify the original post as more of a whine or whinge. But now I'm splitting hairs. <donning flame-retardant suit>

I dont even see it as a whine anymore, I just see it as a part of the photography addiction. When someone rants, its just them itching for more gear. There's nothing wrong with itching for more gear!

I know the break seemed interminable, but we keep to the same schedule year after year and trust me -- no one's rearranging the Jewish holidays. We closed for 2 days for Rosh HaShannah (sometimes called the Jewish New Year) plus a day for Yom Kippur (a solemn fast day -- a holy day but not really a holiday). We're closed every Saturday, or course. The week-long hiatus was for a holiday called Sukkos (or Sukkoth if your Dad's from the other side of town). While not as famous as Passover (after all, Charlton Heston didn't beat up Yul Brynner for this one) it's the same every year.

    Sorry if you were inconvenienced.

A PERSONAL aside -- while I appreciate the comments about bashing, trust me when I say this forum is a model of civility compared to what I used to run into in the rec.photo Usenet groups and what I still see in dpreview.com's forums.

I was hoping you didn't mean what your message first seemed to say, which is why I chose not to bash "you".

Now that you have forever redeemed yourself, by buying through B&H, you have achieved "genius" status and are forgiven any previous transgressions, real or imagined. headscratch.gif

May the "filter" be with you!

I intepreted the OP as saying the fact that they were closed when he needed something sucked, not the fact that they were closed did. And its true- I wouldn't expect them to open up for me, but its unfortunate when my need coincides with their unavailability. I once had to race across town to Adorama to beat out a Jewish holiday; that also suckd, because I'm not the fittest dude in the world and, being New York, it had to be done on foot. The suckiness was in my wheezing, panting, sweaty (and likely stinky) state when I arrived. I still dig the fact that these companies treat their employees well by respecting their religious holidays, rather than treating them like Wal-Mart cattle.

Once I got sand in my eye in Morrocco due to the Sirocco, and couldn't buy any water for something like 15 minutes because it was ramadan and they weren't selling anything. That also sucked.

I'll trade you one "sand in the eye" for a thanksgiving chinese dinner!mwink.gif
