How do I print a help page? It's great stuff, but all I get when I try to print are the frames on the top, left and bottom, but not the main content.

Thanks.

Hi, change the color to white, that helps.
What browser are you using to try and print from?

    Thanks for your quick reply!

No difference with the color white.

I'm using Win XP Pro and IE 6, both with all updates. IE has never been a good printer, frequently cutting off the right side of pages, but I've not had a problem like not printing the main content.

Any suggestions are welcome. Regards. Jeff.

Hm - well, have you tried copy/pasting to a word doc? On a Mac, if you have access to one, the print facility just makes a handy pdf :)

    Thanks, Andy.

That's a workaround I frequently use too, but the results here are inconsistent. Yesterday it did not work (the text appeared only as wiggly lines), but today I have mixed results from a good paste to only partial content.
Hope the new IE will be an improvement. I'll just make do in the meantime. You have a great site, but I still have a lot to learn to use it effectively. Thanks again.

    Jeff.

PS: Have you ever considered using a button for "print page" which many sites use to provide consitent printing results for their clients? Even better, a way to print out entire multi-page help sections? Or simply a PDF file of the help?

    Hi JD,
I tried the old cut and paste. No joy using IE6 ne_nau.gif Firefox printed the information, pretty much as displayed, no problem. Until recently, I was totally an IE user. 100% of the time. The more I use Firefox, the more I like it. I seldom use IE anymore.

    Steve

The printable page button is an excellent suggestion thumb.gif

How about a downloadable PDF booklet of the help pages?

    That would be cool.

Cool, but since they change all the time, pretty hard to work.

I'm curious, how much printing of help pages actually goes on?

What's hard about updating a PDF? Maybe a distributed help structure is more complex than my simple PDF's.

Andy, You're right to ask how much printing actually goes on. As a new user, the first thing I wanted was a hard copy manual. SM is great, but that comes with a degree of complexity and I find the leaning process less than easy with I have to keep backing out of something to browse around in the help files. As one bocomes more familiar with the site, I'm sure the need for printing the entire help would diminish. YMMV.

There's always the option to include a "print" version of each help page, as do many many other websites.

Again, I really appreciate your support. Cheers.

I'd print it more if it was in a "printable" format. Us old guys like to have a piece of paper in our hand.

    Fair point on the difficulty!

But in terms of usefulness it would be very!

When I joined I used the help pages tutorials forums a lot, I frequently copy and pasted useful text from all those into a word doc and printed it off when I did the 'whatever' as I hate switching beetween windows while trying to do something the first time!

If when I joined smugmug I would of received say by Email a link to an instruction manual I could print then I would of found that real useful!

Imagine for example I join smugmug I get the welcome e-mail which then offers links or actual PDfs for -

"Welcome - Setting up your Smugmug site the right way"
    "Personalise your smugmug site"
    etc
    etc

As I say I can only speak for myself but I would of found it useful!
And there is just something about a "Manual" for me!
