These are some of the nicest aquarium shots I've seen.

When you're in the Monterey area, your visit to the Monterey Bay
    Aquarium is on me.

    Hi y'all,
Not to offend anyone but I just don't like Atlanta. Gen. Sherman had the right idea about the place, IMHO. Everytime I drive there one of their lunatic drivers tries to kill me. On one visit a bunch of folks started to mutter rude and nasty things at me because I referred to the carvings of Robert E, Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis at Stone Mountain as "Loser's Monument".

I have to say, I was just in ATL yesterday (never been before except for a stop over at the airport), and I couldn't agree more. Normally big rig truckers know what they are doing, but once I hit GA, suddenly they forgot. They basically dive into the next lane rather than change lanes, whether there is a car there or not, and they wait until after they started their dive to signal. Also, people there don't understand following distance. Most annoying of all they don't understand YIELD (as in YIELD THE LEFT LANE TO FASTER MOVING TRAFFIC or WHEN MERGING ONTO AN INTERSTATE THOSE ON THE ON RAMP YIELD TO TRAFFIC ON THE INTERSTATE). Also...MARTA is kinda worthless, DC's METRO is much better.

If you don't like Atlanta then stay out. Every city has it ignorant people and you guys ran into them. Driving in downtown Atlanta is like driving in most major cities, horrible. But you shouldn't down all drivers in Atlanta for a few bad ones.

It's hard to understand how anyone in the deep south would take offense at your comment about the "Losers' Monument." Maybe they would be more friendly if you showed them your excellent photos. I particularly liked the dragon fish with its form-matching seaweed, and the jellyfish with the form-matching audience. At the rate you're going, I'm surprised that you didn't say anything about the primitive, brainless creatures in the Atlanta aquarium, then refer separately to the jellyfish.

The Atlanta traffic is amazing. I felt safer driving a deuce and a half in Vietnam than driving in Atlanta during rush hour. :yikes

Sorry but I drove for 40 years in NYC and I have also done some driving in LA, DC, Philadelphia, Detroit, Vegas, Boston, Saigon, and Bangkok. I have visited Atlanta on numerous occasions (I can't get my son to move :cry ) and on every visit it has been the same story. The driving in Atlanta is just the worst I have ever experienced.

I don't think its the drivers' fault, probably something in the water. :lol

I thought everyone in Atlanta used the interstate as a parking lot during rush hour. I didn't know you were suppose to be able to drive on it then. :D

...and Harry, one place worse than Atlanta is Knoxville. They have perpetual construction going on there. In 40 years I've never made it from Oak Ridge to the Pigeon Forge turn-off without hitting construction somewhere along the interstate. I think they work on it a section at a time working south from the Pigeon Forge turn-off to Oak Ridge. When they get to Oak Ridge, they go back to the PF turn-off and start all over again.

...and Chattanooga isn't much better. It's been at least five years since I've taken the interstates through Chattanooga. I always take US 411 around it instead.

Dallas-Fort Worth and Charlotte, NC rank high in my book of cities to avoid during rush hour as well.

Then there's probably the granddaddy of all traffic nightmares which is named Washington, D.C. and then there's always the Raleigh-Durham area as well.

Christ, why don't we all just go back to horse and buggy.

...and Harry, the next time you're in Atlanta don't act like the second coming of Sherman and maybe some of them might even like you.

Don't forget - not everybody has gotten to know the real Harry in the Florida wetlands.

Wow Harry, you read my mind. I was about to say that they sure don't drive that way in DC, Chicago, and Charlotte.
And believe it or not, when I pulled in I actually said to myself "must be something in the water"

BTW, I'm not totally against the city. I found it very unique, definitley a place a person should see once in their lifetime (...I mean,..at least once, not no more than once). I was just amazed about how true the statements about driving were (one other thing amazed me, but I don't care to start a political discussion about something that happened in the 1860's)

Hey I live in Florida those Atlanta folks are northerners to me. biggrinbounce2.gif
I always have fun when I visit Atlanta because I usually deal with some very nice folks. As long as we stay off of politics we all get along. Hell my "Loser's Monument" was mild compared to the other two options that I had come up with. lol3.gif

    Hey Dixie,

I was probably unfair to Atlanta as I'm sure as we overdevelop our areas their infrastructure just can't keep up with the growth. We are beginning to see the same tyoe of thing on the Space Coast as the developers' greed is overwhelming our local infrastructure.

Its really a shame as all of our localities are losing their uniqueness.

They love me in Atlanta now :D. I just avoid talking about the Civil War and politics.

Have you been to Charlotte lately? They've fixed it wings.gif(added so many lanes in so many places I've lost count). The one dumb thing they did was make the HOV lane 24 hour, instead of just during rush hours, but things actually move fairly quickly now.

I must admit that I've avoided going through Charlotte for some time now. The last time I tried they were doing the construction out near the airport for the interstate spur that runs down to I-77 and beyond. Glad to hear that it is better now. ...but how's the interstate from Charlotte to Greensboro?

It's ok. I mean, it's never really been bad in my experience. Every time I've gone that way I've been able to do at least the speed limit. There was that bit of construction where 85 turns into 4 lanes, but that's over now.

    Going to Atlanta
My first trip to Atlanta coming up this Friday to visit my son and family. My son has warned me about the rush hour traffic and he was horrified to hear that my plane arrives at 4:50pm. After reading all your comments I now understand his reaction.

Lots of discussion about the Aquarium. The shots were stupendous!! How about other photo ops? Is the zoo worthwhile? Other suggested stops for a traveling photographer?

I'm embarrassed to say I've never visited the zoo, have no idea if it's worthwhile.

ATL traffic is bad, but the Friday before New Year's might be a little slower.

The Fox theater is kinda cool. Cityscape/downtown traffic trails are fun (10th Street bridge over I-75.) The Botanical Gardens are cool, if you're into that sort of thing. They set-up an ice skating rink at Centennial Olympic Park through Jan 7th, that's a cool place for people shots. The Chattahoochee river offers some opportunities. You could try a Hawks game, I managed to sneak in a 70-200 in my coat pocket, once inside they didn't hassle me (I believe good seats are available. lol3.gif)

Thanks for the tips about where to shoot in Atlanta. I loved ALL the shots that you posted. KUDOS

I know I'm doing the Aquarium and the Catahoochie . The botanical garden might be great too, yes I am into that sort of thing! My grandchildren are 2, 5 & 8 so they will be great "foreground" material.

Maybe I'll have shots to share here on my return.

Harry, I have a solution for you. Before you travel to Atlanta again just come over to Orlando for a few days and drive around with these tourists. They are from all over the world and someone puts them in a rental vehicle. If you think truckers are bad!!! At least they know what side of the road to drive on.

Well at least the traffic MOVES in ATL... if you want to complain about traffic & idiot drivers come visit North New Jersey...
I lived & drove in a lot of states. Until I moved to the north part of NJ I thought the worst drivers were in south Louisiana were the worst (where General Sherman founded LSU before going to fight for the yankees :-) ). In central & south Jersey people are a bit civil (i.e. when you drive on the turnpike...) but I only thought I knew how to drive until I got to north NJ... at least they don't have shotguns on the rack.

    p.s. some nice shots.

Nice pictures, I won't go to the ATL Aquarium but I LOVE the Chattanooga one!

I lived in Atlanta for 6+ years. Once we *finally* sold our house (the housing market is terrible there...so many new developments going up everyday) we hit the door running and vowed not to go back.

It's my opinion of course, but I think Atlanta traffic stinks and it's not truck drivers, it's one person in a Hummer zig-zagging all over traffic acting like they own the road.

One exception...if you can get into the city and off the interstates, the photo-ops are endless (midtown, lil 5points, etc)

My brother recently/temporarily moved to Newark area. NJ not only has the worst driver's in the world but also the worst roads in the world. The funniest part is there will be signs put up by the government saying "Your tax dollars at work" saying how much money was spent on the highways in some of the worst parts of the highway.

I could go on about soooooo much more related to negative driving in NJ... but I obviously can't complain too much about NJ, as it is now my state of longest residence & other than the high taxes & negative driving it is a nice place.

Funny, I was in Orlando last nigh to take my wife to the Rod Stewart concert. Before the concert we ate at the Ruth Chris Steak house. Mapquest showed the drive from the restaurant to the Waterhouse Center (now called the Amway Center) to be 15 minutes. It took us over an hour to make the drive. I felt like I was back in Atlanta. :bash

This thread brings to mind an incident involving a friend of mine whose husband lost his left arm in an auto accident years ago. When he's driving and needs to push up his glasses or wipe his nose, he steers with his left knee. This time, Ken and his wife, with his father and mother in the rear seat, were going to visit another relative just north of Atlanta on I-85. Ken, as usual, was driving. When they got to the relative's house and got out, Ken's wife noticed that his father was looking pale. "Are you feeling ill?" she asked him. He shook his head, "This," he said, "is the first time I have ever ridden through downtown Atlanta at 75 miles an hour with a one-armed driver drinking a Coke!"

True story! I've ridden with Ken, though not in Atlanta, and he does do that!

LIAR. I would like to make a point of making sure you understand that those words are complete lies. It is a well known fact that detroit (along with being one of the fattest cities, one of the cities with the highest STD rates, etc) has the worst roads there are. Why do you think SUV's are so popular in the "motor" city. SUV's are the only reason people aren't stuck in the ponds (they call them pot holes) all over the roads. Bah you wanna see bad roads buddy, get that overweight german metal of yours up here. I'll show you some bad roads.

Sorry to jack your thread Harry, but detroit rarely does anything right. And the one thing that have gotten right is forgetting how to manage and care for roads.
