    Good idea thumb.gif

this portrait seems good to me, too thumb.gif , though I do think it lacks some contrasts: it's a little too flat, to me. But that's just me.

May I post my father's picture now? ;)

    Yep! :D
Thanks for your comment. I'm still tryin' to understand how the scanner works.

Try scanning it in RGB instead or grayscale.

Then, in photoshop, use this: image > channel mixer… to get the black & white back while adjusting it slightly. :)

    great pic, judah-

    nothin' beats an old hippie-

problem is, dad dude is probably younger than I am-

pop it with levels and curves for contrast-

    excellent portrait!-

Yes, it is a good photo and it does require work in post processing or post scanning in this case. Here is one way of doing it. I've changed the contrast quite a bit and then applied free plugin from OpticVerve Labs called "still life".

PS: tell your father to QUIT. My father has not quit in time ... doctors are giving him less than 2 years.

My dad just had surgery for stage 3 Gall Bladder Cancer. Pretty serious stuff. He seems to be OK so far, but it's been tough. He's a great man. I'm glad to still have him around.

My mom is glad, too. :D

one of the many ironies in my life-

I owe most of my livelihood to the tobacco companies-

I perform vascular and cardiac ultrasounds, and the highest risk factor there is causing cardiac and vascular problems (in my mind) is smoking-

ted- sorry about your dad- I hope you can make the most of it-

david- hope your dad stays ok-

lost mine a couple years ago-

we weren't that close and his death is completely overshadowed by the loss of my oldest son-

he left me nothing material; no mention in his will (I guess)-

but, more importantly, he left me with a love for photography-

Thanks to all for your reply, inputs, comments and critics.

gefillmore, yeah, you're right, my dad looks pretty hippie these days! But you should have seen him in the 70's! :D

Ted, he was hospitazlized for some three weeks at the end of the summer, some cardiologic problems, got pretty scared, quit smokin', then teh doctors told him it was nothing serious and there was no reason to worry about. He returned back home and started smokin' 2 or 3 cigarettes per day, then it was 5, 10, 1 pack and now he's back in full force, 3 packs per day, as it's been for the last 35 years. I don't think he'll never quit, but smoke won't kill him. I'm sure I'l find him in his office's chair one morning. Work will be the killer.

Thanks to all for your comments on my photo. I put it straight here after scanning. As I told in my post about my new adventure in film photograpy, I'm tryin my best to get "nice" photos without editing, neither in the darkroom nor in software editing. I'm sure I'll try to better the results very soon with some curves and small adjustments.

    Cheers. :D

Just a casual portrait two months ago, I was testing a little flash setup (SB800 + ombrella).

EDIT: argh, there's some yellow cast on the "web export", I'll fix that later ;)
