Questions on supporting XMP

Sorry if this has been covered, but dgrin's search engine hasn't indexed the 3-letter word XMP in the past (I just added it) -- so I can't search to see if XMP has been discussed.
A customer emailed us today asking for XMP caption support. Our question is, what happens when we get an image that has a caption embedded in EXIF? Which trumps which? My answer is XMP should trump EXIF. You?
What about IPTC? What's the pecking order if a caption appears in both XMP and IPTC? :dunno Currently, IPTC trumps EXIF and manually entering a caption trumps them all.

XMP > IPTC > Exif
(With user input overriding that of course.)
my 17 cents at least..
User Input, then
IPTC Core Schema for XMP, then
IPTC Information Interchange Model (IIM), then
EXIF
Any hope that smugmug will start making some of these other IPTC/XMP fields available to us? I'd love to use Headline under the thumbnails on the traditional page layout.
Something easier to accomplish would be another link similar to EXIF, but for IPTC data.
For those that aren't familiar with IPTC, here are a few links:
