A spot ruined my day...

[Not sure where to put this.]

Well not entirely. I noticed what seemed to be a hair, and no another spot showing up on the view port of my camera (XTi). I cannot get them to show up in pictures however and switching lenses did nothing.

My reasoning through all this...
First I was worried that it was on the sensor, but they would probably show up in pictures, especially when I took pictures of white pieces of paper.

I am led to believe it is on the mirror because as I understand the camera the mirror moves up (or down... out of the way) when the picture is taken. I am thinking it does this as I believe it is just a mirror for the viewport.

So... how do I go about cleaning the mirror? Should I just take it to a shop or something...? (Don't want to pay too much for two spots that don't show on pictures)

Any help is appreciated.

If you're not sure what the problem is or how to fix it I'd take it in to a shop.

It's like if you hear a clunking noise in your car you aren't going to go at with a wrench if you don't know what you're doing, right?

**Also, if THEY (the tech in the store) mess something up it's on them. If you break something while "fixing" it, it's on you. :)

If it were on the mirror, when you take the lens off you'll see it on the mirror. More likely it's on the focusing screen. Do you have a giotto's rocket air blower? If not, get one. It's a good way to blue dust off the focusing screen.

    Where is the focusing screen?

nevermind, I see it! I think I can see it on the mirror.

I am assuming you can not just brush it with a kleenex very softly or anything?

People say not to. I know I've used lens paper on mine without issue, but again people do say not to. You could just blow it with your mouth while holding it lens mount side down. The focusing screen BTW is what you see if you open the lens mount and then look up into the camera (it makes a 90 degree angle with the viewfinder.

On the focusing screen. :ivar Quite a relief...

now... getting it off. Time for a trip to people who know and to get a "giotto's rocket air blower".

btw, the car point was moot (mute?) as that is how I learned to work on cars. thumb.gifmwink.gif

It is ok, he is happy because I am coming up to help him tomorrow. 3 hour drive to work on a non-vanos V8... yay.

Anyways, many thanks for all the help. Don't know what I would do without dgrin.
