A 222 Megapixel Picture

Hello,

I am new here (currently setting up my smugmug account). I thought, I'd introduce myself with a really "big picture":
Machu Picchu 222 MP
I stitched it last Jan.
The resulting TIF was over 1.95GB (compressed zip format).
I struggled quite a bit on it.

The picture can be viewed inside a Flash App. You can zoom in and browse around. There are 4 people in the picture, but most people on find 2 :D

Even though the photo was shot with a long lens, the resulting FOV is wideangle ;). This makes some problems due to compression of DOF.

Machu Picchu is the most amazing place I have ever been at.

I am hoping to do San Francisco in 1 Gigapixel soon (not sure when I will find the time though).

Thanks guys. I appreciate the comments. One guy has contacted me regarding a 160" wide print. Not sure if he is for real or if he knows that printing costs alone will be over $1000. Another guy got turned off right away when he found out what it costs to print.

I have tons of wide panoramas. Does smugmug support priting the 12" x howeverlong" format?

BTW: Nice forum. I can see I will be hanging out here a lot.

Andy: If you like tutorials there is more here:

The one about using Google Earth to find Photo Opps might be of interest.

Awesome image, I can't imagine all the work that went into that. I had fun zooming around in it.

I like it just as is, and yet I'd also like to see a bunch of people in it. That would be fun, to zoom around and play Where's Waldo?

Also, if there is a tutorial in this that you think would be of use to others, I'd love to be able to add it to our How To section, up in the navbar here on dgrin. Let me know if you've got any in you!

Amazing photo. Two people are sitting next to each other, one is in the shadows next to a wall and you can see what looks like a backpack in front of him to the right in the sun, the 4th person is half obscured by some sort of plant.

Hah. You are correct clap.gif. The two in the shadow are hard to find. Good job.
I took the photo after I was sure everyone had left (couldn't see them with bare eyes).

I surely hope that my tutorials are of use to others nod.gif.
I am currently working on the complete digital workflow (several tutorials) in Photoshop CS2.

    Montana. Hm. Sounds exciting.
I will give it some serious thought, headscratch.gif but there seems to be a waiting list already.
Why shootout? Is it some sort of competition?

I already got a large print of Bryce Canyon on my wall.
    http://www.aguntherphotography.com/winstuff.htm
I had to shrink it too, since the upload limit was somewhere near 50MB/image. But that didn't matter, since I still got 300dpi at 40"x30". Its pretty cool. When you put your nose onto the picture you can still see a lot of detail. It always impresses my visitors.
The lady at the framing store wouldn't leave me alone until I had explained how I did it. Guess she never saw a large high quality print before rolleyes1.gif
With stitching you can beat any large format camera resolution easily, but it only works for static scenes (to some degree with dynamic scenes if you plan the overlap).

No competition. Just what we call it. Ask Andy, he named it. :D

If you get on the waiting list now your chances of going are very good. It would be great to have you along.

I personally always thought of this event name as of "shoot your heart out" :-)
And no, no competition. Guys (and gals) usually would share everything if you ask: tripods, hdd space, CFs, lenses, filters, bodies, and, in some cases, traveling mates... rolleyes1.gif
