Virginia International Gold Cup Steeplechase
This past weekend was the 69th Virginia International Gold Cup Steeplechase races at Great Meadow, the Plains, Virginia. I've only had a chance to get a few pictures from some early races up so the lighting was still kind of harsh, but here are a few. And, the watermarks are in place because I post many pictures to an equestrian forum and have (on more than one occasion) had people "borrow" pictures.
Any tips for the future with the BRIGHT sunlight and DARK shadows (since I was stuck on the wrong side of the track)? I played with settings most of the day and didn't really have much luck with any of them.
I was using a Nikon D50 with the Nikkor 70-300mm cheap-o lens. (Hopefully by next year I can upgrade the lens.)

Tough, tough lighting. All you can do is shoot in RAW and/or try to do the best you can during post-processing
My qucik edit could have been done better and easier using a RAW file. But you get the idea
Steve
Thanks!! Yeah, my camera can shoot RAW, but the program Nikon provides doesn't actually EDIT the picture, just converts it (so what's the point? unless I'm missing something within the program which is totally possible.) I don't have the PS that can edit RAW, so I've just been shooting JPEG. Guess I'm going to have to upgrade my PS, huh?

Christina,
Yeah, I think you need to look into what your Nikon converter is cabable of. You should be able to change exposure and easily adjust white balance. If it doesn't let you do that, then maybe it's time to upgrade to Elements 5.0.

From the look of the jump in your first shot, we were close to each other and didn't even know it.
Tough conditions for sure, but I like 1, 4 and 5. It was overcast when I was there between 1 and 3 or so...but I don't think I had enough lens. Needed the 100-400 for sure.
