Hare Scramble at the lake

I loaded up my bike and riding gear with the intention of competing in a hare scramble race at Milford Lake in Kansas on Sunday.

But, after riding the practice lap, I realized my heart just wasn't in it. So, I took off my racer hat (and gear:D ) and put on my photographer hat.

The thing I like about shooting hare scrambles is that you can get so close to the action.

Very interesting stuff, maybe just a bit flat.

Thanks. I'm still learning this stuff. What does "flat" mean here, and how do I fix/avoid it?

some of those trails look like fun. good set of shots thumb.gif

"flat" above, I believe, is referring to the colors. I think only in reference to the few shots that aren't in the direct sunlight. I don't really agree, I think the colors are OK, but lots of people prefer a lot of pop in the colors. a very basic S-curve just accentuates everything - colors brighter, whites whiter, blacks blacker. So the word flat comes from your RGB curve, its a flat line instead of a curve.

We have some tutes on "Pop", here: http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/1100284

    check out Photoshop 101.

Ok, I see. I think I'm gonna have to spring for the full Photoshop. I have PS Elements, and I couldn't find the tools that tutorial used.

I eyeballed some adjustments. Is this better?

Yup, that's the idea thumb.gif (glad you kept it subtle, easy to go overboard)

Nice shots! The colors look pretty natural to me but the photos do become a little more eye catching with a bit of tweaking.

It's a bummer when you just aren't "feeling it" when you go out to ride. Any chance you managed to get your entry fee back???

I really like the start shot you got with all the 2nd row guys ducking down to avoid that nasty wicked roost! #455 is sure lucky he didn't have a 450 in front of him :D

I'm hoping to shoot a Scramble next weekend (weather permitting) but the terrain won't be nearly as interesting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed to come out with a few keepers.

    Nice job thumb.gif

    Thanks!

I didn't get my entry fee back :cry but one advantage to riding the practice lap is having a good idea of where to hike with the camera. :D

Good luck with your scramble shoot. You sound like you've done these before.

Hard to believe the terrain in Colorado won't be as interesting as what we have in Kansas. Although, Milford Lake is one of the more visually interesting courses on our circuit.

The problem with all the tracks around here is that there are no trees, and everything is usually completely brown. The Scramble course for this weekend is a combination of two motocross tracks and tons of back area trails. Here's a shot from last January that shows some of the track.

See what I mean? NO TREES! But hey those mountains sure do look pretty :D
