Fall in NYC

Fellow DGrin New Yorkers:

I'm taking the family to spend 4 days (3 days net counting fly from San Diego) in NYC. I'll be staying in upper west manhattan (73rd and broadway) and I'd appreciate a few suggestions from the natives:

1-What are the must photograph locations?
2-I'm planning on taking a small tamrac adventure backpack with some filters, offcamera flash, one or two lenses and the handcam (yes, official tourist). Will I be an easy target?
3-Anything you want to say... a nice hidden restaurant you like... that particular painting in that museum.... anything...

I'm not a native (not even the same country) but I was there recently. The first 24 shots in this gallery were taken in New York.

The first shot was taken from New Jersey just outside the first PATH station accross the river from Manhatten. We were there around 9/11 so I don't know if the search-lights are still there or if they were just for the commemoration.

You can go up the Empire State building and the Rockafeller center (and maybe some others I don't know about). We went up the Rockafeller center which meant that we could get pictures that included the Empire State building . They also have a cool room that seems to be some kind of art work. It tracks people in the room and lights up the ceiling and wall near where they are. If you go up there make sure you go right to the top so that you can see over the big glass screens that are on the lower levels.

The giant whale model is in the natural history museum which was really good. We had a couple of hours in there but would have stayed longer if it hadn't closed. They have a good number of dinosaur skeletons that are definitely worth seeing and a science exhibition which tries to convey the relative sizes of our universe and an atom(!) and does a pretty good job too.

We didn't go to Liberty Island, just took the Staten Island Ferry (free) past it and then went back again. Neither of us felt that we missed out too much by doing that (the shot of the statue was taken at 200mm though). However, we were in a bit of a hurry and your kid(s) might not see it that way!

I carried my Lowepro slingshot bag around the whole time and often had my camera out and never felt threatened. It probably helped that we stayed in Manhatten most of the time and weren't out too late.

John's of Bleecker Street did some very nice thin pizza. Our guide book said be prepared for queues but we were a bit early so had no trouble getting in.

Just got back from NYC...

I second the Katz' recommendation but you MUST, MUST, MUST go to Rice-to-Riches, 37 Spring St. OH MY GOD!!!!!

If you can manage it go to the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx. Also, you can get some awesome shots from Chelsea Piers at night.

I came back from there two weeks ago. Loved the city, reminds me of my hometown (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

I know, I know.... It's hard to select a few pictures when you have 400 of them (and you like most of them). I'm creating a book right now of the NYC photos as a xmas gift to my wife. That has ONLY 183 pictures... I think when I finish the book I'll be able to filter down a bit more.
