Dodgin' & Burnin'

Here's my first try at maskin' a print. I made the basic exposure (30"@F8, grade 2.5) and then burned in the sky for some 10" more (grade 3.5) to give it a deeper tone. After reviewing the print I think I'll try another one and burn the sky a bit more. Please don't look at the spots on the top, it's partly my dirty scanner and partly the negative. Comments? :D

I wish I knew more about film processing to be able to critique the work. All I know is that I gave up on darkroom work long before I got to the point you're at. It was college and I had other things on my to do list at the time, like skiing and chasing after blondes.

Keep at it, to my untrained eyes it seems you have a real talent for it.

That's the difference between you and me Chad, when I started workin' in the darkroom (2 weeks ago) I already had a blonde by my side..... :D
Thanks a million for your comments. Don't really know if I'm talented or not but I'm enjoyin every minute of it. It's really much more relaxing to me than digital photography.

Judah, looks like you are off to a good start. I gave up the darkroom about 6 years ago when I went digital. It was a lot of fun in the darkroom burning and dodging and if you get a chance, try to locate a copy of this B&W book. "Black and White photographc printing workshop" by Larry Bartlett and Jon Tarrant, from the UK, printed by silver pixel press. Rochester, NY, USA, ISBN 1-883403-39-1, It is an excelent book on B&W how to and their methods did wonders to my images. I learned more from them than I did of years of trying. Good luck and would like to see more of your work.
    Have a great day!

Hi Orv, thanks for your kind words. It is really a lot of fun. As I wrote in some other post about this new adventure, I was very tired of sitting in front of a computer. I work 8-10 hours a day with a screen light in my eyes and the last thing I want is shooting and then come back home for some more computer time. Film photography brought back the enjoyment I was loosing. Right now I'm reading the 3 books from Ansel Adams (The Camera, The Negative, The Print). I was lucky enough to found them used on Amazon for 12$ each. The italian translated version costs 42€ each! :D

Excellent stuff. If I were you I'd keep experimenting and see what a few more seconds, or a darker filter can do for the sky, but the foreground looks lovely.

Heh, at that time it was about blondes, not a blonde. :D
