Great series so far. I can't wait to see the rest.

It looks like you had plenty of good lighting there to shoot at ISO 800 & still stop the action. What shutter speeds were you getting?

    Thanks,
    Dave

I am very happy, I however do need to pick up a bigger zoom lens with the Av around 2. I've seen the Canon's, Sigma's and Tamrons, but they seem to be around the 200mm mark. Anything longer? The 200's seem to run about $1400+ so It may be awhile before I am able to pick another one up.

Nicely done. I'll have to do the Austin Ice Bats this year now. A friend has season tickets, on the glass. Can I ask a favor? I see you post large jpgs to the forums. If you post smaller (i.e. narrower) photos then its easier to view. Too often the large photos make one scroll left and right to see the entire photo.

And yea, fast teles are expensive! What work have you found you had to do the most in post with your hockey images? White balance? Exposure adjustment?

Yep, a faster zoom would be nice for this venue. The F2.8's would have got you another stop of speed (1/250). That along with using ISO1600, would get you to 1/500, in this lighting. Just about perfect IMO thumb.gif

The Sigma, doesn't have IS but it can be picked up for less than $700 (Delta Iternational, a superb dealer) and is very close image quality-wise to the Canon 70-200mm F2.8L IS ($1650, or so).

If you want fast and longer, you will have to pay for it. The 300mm F2.8 IS runs about $3700 :eek1

Yea I notice Canon has a 400mm f/2 prime at $6100 that would be awesome. Do you know which sigma it is for around the $700 mark? I have thought about picking up a 1.4x extender but it comes at a cost of 1 f/stop which would put my 70-200L at f/5 but with the 1.4x it would give me 280mm, plus then you factor in the 1.6 crop from the camera should net around the 400mm mark.

As for the pictures, all I did was mess with the white balance and play with the curves to lighten it up abit.

On a side note, the Director of Sales and Marketing seen the pictures tonight and wants to talk to me about becoming their team photgrapher. So wish me luck guys :)

Congrats on the possible team photographer position ^5 Sounds like a good way to get some low light action experience and make some $, while doing it mwink.gif Now if you can get them to cough up the bucks for the 400mm F2.8, you'll be in fat city rolleyes1.gif

The Sigma I mentioned is the 70-200mm F2.8. Pretty much the same price as the Canon 70-200 F4L.

I wouldn't recommend using an extender. You need more light, not less. Plus, 200mm (320FOV) has got to give you great rink coverage. Even at 200mm, on a 1.3X 1D (or 1D MKII), that's the lens I see pro's using to shoot at Professional hockey games.

I think the 400 would be a bit much. The 70-200 2.8L IS USM would be
just the ticket. The 1DmkII, now that would be good :)

Thanks for the luck Steve. I checked out the link to the Sigma, that might very well be the next lens purchase. I can wait to set down and talk about what they want, etc. It would be nice If I could talk them into a 1D MKII and I purchase the lens myself.
