Hello all,
I'm not sure if this is the proper forum for this post, but it looked like the best choice. Until recently, I was a member of another online photo site, but the quality of work I've seen on smugmug convinced me that I needed to learn from this crowd. :bow
I bought my first camera two-and-a-half years ago. It was a Canon 10D and I didn't even know how to operate it when I took it out of the box. I have no formal training in photography, so I immersed myself in books and try to spend as much time as possible out in the field (literally) with my gear. I figure the only way to aquire skill is to get out, shoot and see what happens.
I shoot digital, aside from a Mamiya 645 that I've shot some E6 in. I want to understand photography in every aspect that I can, both film and digital. Being a designer and art director, I know my way around photoshop. But having worked with some outstanding photographers over the years, I firmly believe in getting it right inside the camera and minimizing post production.
I invite everyone to visit my site at www.jimshoemakerphotography.com and review my work thus far. Please feel free to leave comments and suggestions in the guest book. Criticism is welcome so long as it's constructive. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and considerations.

As far as lenses, I have a variety. I have a 16-35mm f2.8L I use for a lot of landscape work. I have a 35-350mm f3.5 L that's my work horse, and now that I'm getting into portraiture more I use it for that a lot, along with a 24-105mm f4 L IS that's lighter. Most of my wildlife work is done with a 600mm f4 L IS lens with a 1.4x teleconverter. I've been shooting mostly with a 20D for the last year, and it's proven itself to be a great camera. (It probably just wishes it belonged to a great photographer. )
