Great Horned Owl

I was out looking for an interesting sunset location and stopped at a park near my home when I heard hooting. After a short walk I discovered this pair of Great Horned Owls. They just sit there, in the shadows of the trees at sunset - knowing there isn't much light, and that what's there is quickly fading. (probably smirking about it too . . . )

You were lucky to see them! clap.gif

I used to hear an owl (think it was a barred owl from the call) behind my house but I could never find the sucker!

    Wow!
What luck! Way to take advantage of an unexpected shot. Very nice light even if it was fading. The second one looks like a National Geographic pic.

Nice captures Robin. How about you come down to the Viera Wetlands at sunrise and we will shoot some eagles and then head up to your area around sunset to shoot some owls? I'll let you take a few shots with the 500mm. deal.gif

Great, great shots! They are magnificent creatures, aren't they?

i wonder, though, if maybe (not sure why I think this) but maybe they might be long eared owls?

    In any case, splendid work!

here is a link to my encounter with an adult GHO and her owlet, in my backyard:

Thanks Jen, these guys blend in very well and can be difficult to spot against the pine tree trunk.

Ann, thank you and yes they are quite fantastic birds. I did a google search to identify them and the GHO was the closest match I found but I'll take a look for long eared, thanks for that info as well. You've got some killer shots of the juvie, well done!
