Poster sizing question

I've just started doing custom posters. Smug says it can only be 48mp to upload.

I was told before that you start with the size that you are going to print in, thus for this poster, is 20x30. However, that is over the 48mp uploading size limit on smugmug.

In my understanding, 8x12, 12x18 sizes are the same ratio as a 20x30. If I do my work and upload a 12x18 size and the customer purchases a 20x30 how much quality loss would I be losing and would this work?

What sizes are ya'll starting out with when designing a poster?

Also, just so happens another poster I did was over the 16mb limit, so I saved it as a quality "10" in PShop. When printing the poster, am I losing a lot of quality?

You can make it 20x30, no problemo. Don't make it 300dpi, which yes, would be over 48 megapixels. The lab will take care of uprezzing, as needed.
