Boston Ballet Gala, 25 October 2006
One more chance to shoot before the Nutcracker takes over for months. These were all shot at the dress rehearsal for a one night special performance with Caonn 5D + 1135mm f/2.0. The dress rehearsal was the afternoon of 25 October and the performance was that evening.

This is a new idea for Boston Ballet. The company had the Wang Center for a two week run of Don Quixote. Normally, there are performances Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings and matinées Saturday and Sunday. So, the company pays for the theater on days when it doesn't use it. Maybe there is an opportunity here? Why not a one night only crown pleaser on Wednesday? It was a near sell out and gave all the principals and soloists a chance to dance their best roles from the last year.
One big story of this season is Larissa Ponomarenko. Last winter she broke her foot and was on crutches until the end of the season. She is now fully recovered and back on stage.

Really fully recovered.

Larissa's perennial partner is Nelson Madrigal and having her back seems to be a tonic for him as well.

Another dancer who has been injured is Tai Jimenez. But she also seemed in fine form.

In the time when Larissa was injured, the other principal ballerinas have really come into their own. In particular, Lorna Feijóo has become a superstar in her own right. Many of my best shots this last year have been of her.

Damian Woetzel is guest artist, not a member of Boston Ballet. He is a Boston native who attended Boston Ballet's school and then had an illustrious career as a principal dancer for The New York City Ballet. Now he is semiretired and is transitioning to a second career as a student at Harvard's Kennedy Center of Government. At the Gala, he danced Suite of Dances choreographed by Jerome Robbins for Baryshnikov when he was near the end of his dancing career. It's a dance that emphasizes the masterful physical expression and self confidence that only a few dancers ever achieve.

Only one afternoon to rehearse all the dances for a full 3 hours of performance! Nikko Nissinen, the artistic director of Boston Ballet, called it a
"rush rehearsal." In spite of that, the performance was near perfect, fresh, and one of the most fun evenings I've ever had at the Ballet, a sort of greatest hits from the last year.
