Make square photos default to square prints

AAAAARGH!

OK, now that I've gotten that out. I hope this isn't one of those frequent cases where I just didn't read the *beep*'ing manual closely enough again...

I would like to know if there's any way make it so that when people purchase photographs that are square in dimensions, to have the print size default to a square size, like 5x5 or whichever first square size I have made available.

I hate it when I see someone purchase a 4x6 crop of a photograph that I cropped to be square.

Thanks for any advice!

Umm...only set pricing on square formats? If hte rest are blank, they shouldn't be able to order them.

    :nono be careful

You have to set the prices to 0 (zero) for customers to not be able to buy that size. leaving it blank will default the prices to smugmug prices

Can one set pricing per photograph? Most shots in my galleries are 4x6 aspect ratio, but a few are square.

OK- well, that was easy enough for me to go and check. Yes, I can set pricing per photograph! That's cool. It will be a bit tedious to do, and a smarter default size would still be a nifty feature to have, but at least I can do something about it. Thanks!

yes you can. when you have entered the custom pricing page, look near the top, you will find 4 options, image, gallery, bulk gallery and portfolio. Choose 'image' :D

If you want them all square, why not set the gallery? or do you want the 4x6's to stay 4x6?

    Thanks for your advice.

I have mostly 4x6's, and the technique you recommend does work, but it actually is quite tedious. Let's say I upload 100 photographs, but only eight of them are square. I have to go to Custom Pro Pricing, click on Image, zero out everything, then enter pricing for the square sizes only. And repeat for each square photo - there's no Images (bulk) option, and no ability to copy pricing from one image to another. Between page-load times, and typing it would take quite a while, not to mention it's error-prone.

That said, I should add here that I love smugmug and don't mean to come off as a complainer. But I'm a software engineer first, photographer second, and these are things I would work on, if I had my hands in it!

    Thanks again.

You can make it quicker if you set custom: 0 and to: all. You will only need to change the sqaure sizes.

True. However, don't you need to make sure the digital download is blank? I seem to recall something there & it's probably why I mis-remembered for the rest <off to double-check my pricing :tiptoe >

Still a pain in the ....
Shootoing one race I'll upload 5 galleries and on average 125 photographs in each gallery and maybe 25 of those have been cropped square. Extremely time consuming to try and set the option that only the square option print sizes show for these photos - that could be 100+ photos to set individually.

Right now I do not do that - each photo has the ability to choose the incorrect size of 4x6 - 8x125, ect.

There really needs to be a bulk way of doing this!bowdown.gif

To make it a little quicker I set up a private gallery named "square pricing" or something similar (I've done the same for other formats as well). I set prices for that gallery on the square format options and all the rest at 0. So when I need to price individual images in a gallery I can use that pre-priced gallery to do quick pricing.

But I agree they really need a "bulk-image" pricing tool. It's very frustrating to have to go through a large gallery to find each individually priced pic. Especially because it can take at least 30 secs each or if you forget about 1 and change the gallery price and it doesn't change the individual images.
