Bank Card Theft

Hubby got notified today that his bank card was suspended due to suspicious activity. Went to the bank and found out someone has helped themselves to close to $2K in purchases and cash yesterday!!!!!

The bank assures us it will be replaced by end of next week.

Last place it was used was the bank machine at our branch! The scheme is to have a secondary card reader in the machine, then some kind of spy syste (eyes or camera) to read the pin while you input it.

Grrrrrrrrr

Hope my car payment goes through!!!!!

Awww, that really sucks. Having been the victim of ID theft, I can tell you it leaves you feeling very vulnerable in the future. I hope it works out for you, Ann.

    Sorry to hear that!
So now we have to carry a small black sheet or cloth with us and duck under it while we punch in our code at the ATM? Geesh! (Like the old time photographers used to focus their ground glass cameras)

Hope your car payment goes through too!

I think it is going to be okay - the bank says it takes 5 business days to replace the funds, but there is enough left to cover my car payment today and the rest will be back in time for the next mortgage payment.

Apparently the first place the thief used the card was at a weapons store - that should have been a huge red flag. S/he then managed to spend $500 at the Gap and withdraw a grand before the account was suspended.

Sigh - by November of every year it seems I am wanting the new year to start... this year has been crisis after crisis again.
Lost a friend to cancer, put our business into recievership, started a new job, started a new business, have an aunt that is day to day terminal with cancer and my mother has been diagnosed with emphysema.

But the sun is shining and the roofers are supposed to be here today (finally- booked them 5 months ago) so all is not lost. And the new job means that someone else stays up at night worrying that there is enough cash to meet payroll. And the new business is starting to look promising.

And furthermore, my little tribe is all healthy and thriving.

Thanks everyone for all of your support.

Thats terrible news to get ann. Ive had one of mine stolen (along with all our wedding/engagement rings). At least its fraud & you dont have to pay.

Dee the cloth wont protect you in this instance..many times they fix a small slotted card reader over the front of the machines card entrance & it looks just like a part of the unit. As your card goes in...it reads the info & stores it. They then walk up & take it & download the info.

Always stop & be aware of what may look different at each machine re the card entry point.

No kidding, eh? There is lots of work here right now. And trust me, the tax structure in Canada is such that I am already supporting another family in addition to mine!!!

    Thanks for the support

Hi gus. We had our home broken in to many, many years ago. That is a really violating experience. This is frustrating, and will be horrible if the bank doesn't cover it.

I will certainly be looking a lot closer at bank machines etc. The dang things are so convenient though - I really like the pay at the pump option for getting gas and haven't carried much cash in about 20 years - plastic is so nice. But of course there is risk with everything.

    Thanks gus

    weird-

    I've never used an atm-

use cc all the time and pay all at the end of the month-

seems like about once or twice a year I'll see something on the bill that's not ours and I'll call the cc company-

they credit the charge(s) back and issue us another card-

I do a lot of internet purchases but think more likely they get the numbers from direct purchases-

I try to keep my antivirus, firewall and spyware/malware programs up-to-date and check my cc bills online about every two weeks-

I'm guessing the retailers end up losing the money for not checking the card/purchaser more closely-

try to use amex almost exclusively because of great customer service-

sorry this happened to you and I hope everything gets taken care of-

Sorry to hear about this, Ann... But I definitely agree with the above. I almost never have more then $40 in my wallet anymore (unless I'm about to get rid of it).

At least it wasn't a full identity theft. That can be MUCH harder to clean up.

Make sure you check your credit report closely! It's free: https://www.annualcreditreport.com

I have a friend from Germany. Apparently, over there the cards use computer chips (harder to forge than magnetic strips) and they have a hologram of the persons photo on them (so it's an ID and credit card in one - meaning that there person's ID gets checked every time they use a credit card). Maybe one day we'll be on that system too.
