Storybook Bounce

These shots were taken at a family gathering and were not set up...The room was a very dark room with brown painted walls, so there was no reflected light from the walls. One open window provided extremely bright light. I noticed that every time a child would open a book, the light from the page reflected up onto their face in a magical way providing an unexpected bounce. The children were sitting on the floor, but due to the large crowd I was forced to shoot from across the room over a sofa full of people. Not the best angles. Highlights were blown, which doesn't really bother me, I cloned out the BGs to darken the shadows. Substantial cropping to remove toys, people. Thoughts?

Your first shot is magnificent!!! I would crop even closer to draw the eye to the child --
at the top: to just above the mom's forehead
at the bottom: just below the open pages.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Great job of making the most of difficult lighting. I have a real weakness for theatrical looking shots like these. I prefer the color shots, though I can't exactly say why. Nice work. thumb.gif

These are beautiful -- I really like the first one in color and the second one in B&W.

Susan - Just like everyone else, I love the first one. I think it's very special. The proposed cropping might improve it, I don't know for sure. I do know that I like the color ones better then the B&W. Don't know why, just do. Looks like you had a good day!

Susan, they are beautiful shots. If I was behind the camera I would take them from a lower angle though.

Thank you all (Lisa, Coldclimb, kmh, Ginger, Gus, and Chris) for your comments!

George, Scott and Richard....I prefer the color versions too. I always want to convert to B/W, but these seemed better in color...warmer, even though I used a brown tone in the B/W. :D

Ted...you are right about the angle. I had no choice here, it was a room full of about 30 people gathered around...I was shooting from over people's heads who were sitting on a sofa in front of me...not the most ideal! Thanks for your comments...much appreciated!

Thanks, Mike! These little ones don't have feathers.....but they can move fast!!! Don't worry.........I bought myself a new long-er lens today, so now maybe I can catch a bird or two! :D
