Hi there,

I am relativley new to Smugmug and was hoping there was an all encompassing area or document I can read to understand it's functionality. What I am referring to is recommended photo organization tips on how to arrange the photos using catgeories and subcats, the best way to use its features, keywords, privacy, etc.

Is there an all encompassing place to go and read about this?

I look forward to your replies.

    wave.gif Hi, sure :D

    SmugMug Help

And if you want, just ask your specific questions here, we'll answer them. There's lots available on Dgrin, too. The trick is, finding it. Say you want to find info on keywords. Search in the search box on our help pages, and you'll get info from our Help, Dgrin, and blogs.

OK here is an example I have. Can I do this? I have a set of photos I took while in San Francisco. I have uploaded them into a gallery. However, some of these photos I do not want to make available for viewing. What I thought of doing was moving the pictures I wish to show into another gallery. This gallery I would then make available for viewing. How do I ensure this gallery will be available for viewing and the other one not? So now that I have split up my San Fran photos I thought of giving them all a common keyword, say "San Francisco". This way I could do a search using keyword for "San Francisco" and it would return all my San Fran photos as if they were all together in one gallery. Does this scenario make sense given the SmugMug framework? If not then please describe how you would arrange your site. I am getting hung up on the organization of photos for my site and want to make sure I do it right from the start.

These are just some of the questions I have wrt Smugmug. I am hoping someone can give me an organization method to use that works and is not too confusing.

    Thanks for your time.

Make it private, and add a password if you wish, too:

you can keyword them all but only keywords on photos in public galleries will yield results:

If I make it private will this ensure it is not available in the galleries?

So if I were to split up my photos into 2 galleries or even more than 2 for that matter how would I be able to see them all together? Or once you start moving your photos around into other galleries then you can never see them all together. Make sense?

Private galleries will show to YOU when you are logged in, but NOT to your visitors.[/quote]

Andy, what if I moved some of my San Fran Photos into different galleries. Sure I could go to my homepage and see them but I would have to look for them in the different galleries. Is there an easier way of tagging the photos such that I could enter the tag and I would all th photos with same tag?

My only problem is all my galleries are private so they will not appear on my home page. So keywords will not work for me. the reason to make all my galleries private is I intend to program my nav bar to go to all the galleries.

As a result if I move photos from one gallery into different galleries I will never be able to bring them all back together using a keyword/tag since I use private galleries.
