Description links to new window - How?

I spent a bit of time searching for an answer to this, but no luck.
So, I like to put links in my gallery descriptions (and/or photo descriptions) that a visitor can click on and go to another web site (not on my Smugmug site).
As an example, see the links in the "Maps" gallery description found here:
http://geoffw.smugmug.com/gallery/2164315/1/112398590
There are 2 problems with the links as they now stand:
1. They are "clickable" and work. So, that's a good thing. But, they do not open up a new window for the destination. I know that there is HTML code to cause a link to open in a new window, but I don't know where to put that. Do I just type the required code into the description text box?
2. Also, note that the second link to a Wikipedia site is "broken". That is, when I type the link in, the resulting link's "code" stops at the colon and this part ":Map" is not included. If I type the raw HTML code for the link, I believe that would force it to include the full link. But, again, do I just type raw HTML code into the gallery description box?
I have to say there is a lot of great information on customizing the Smugmug sites, but for some reason this seemingly simple thing has got me beat.
Thanks for any help (even if I find out I can't do it : )
