An Arctic bird making an very rare (unprecedented?) appearance at Southern California's Salton Sea has birders twittering with excitement.

Dude, there are no icebergs in SoCal. What are you thinking?

Pics (including a posse of photogs rushing to document the momentous occasion.)

Story
CALIPATRIA, Calif. - A small white gull with an ordinary name had bird watchers flocking to the Salton Sea for what they call a "mega-rarity."

The Salton Sea, a 35-mile-long lake stretching across the Imperial and Riverside county line, is a popular stop for birds heading south, and Guy McCaskie, co-author of "Birds of Salton Sea," believed he spotted a Ross' gull there a week ago.

The appearance of the arctic bird nearly 100 miles east of San Diego would be the first reported in California and would place it hundreds of miles farther south than it had ever been seen.

A rare bird will do that to the birders. They have a marvloue hotline. Once a rare bird is spotted every birder in the country knows about it in a few hours.

Right now in Viera we have a rare masked duck in residence and birders are flocking in. Yesterday I met birders who flew in from Virgina, Tennessee and Maryland to get a glimpse at the masked duck.

Usually I'm the only one out there on weekday mornings now there are 10-12 cars there everyday.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
