Hey Randy...a few things...you might want to check your color mode and/or hues as it seems yellow-ish. Secondly, I shoot with an 85 for tight head shots and a 30 for wide action shots. I think you'll find that even a 50 is too wide for tight baseline action. I use the 200 for downcourt action.
As an example: 30mm
85mm
It's mainly just the type of shooting I prefer but primary point being I think you'll find even 50 just too tight if you're looking to get shots similar to the first and you're camped at/near the baseline.
I think i accidently changed WB...i am still getting used to the 30d...i shot in RAW so it's easy enuf to fix.
I was considering the 30 1.4 but i'll try my nikon 50 1.8 on the d50 or d200 body thursday 1st...
I am still experimenting w/ BB & FB...BB is even tougher even tho the light is better.
I like your shots alot...in fact they are the best HS BB pics I've seen.

No problem...hope that helps...try out that 50 and see what you think. It's MUCH better but I still find it cuts off a little too much. My 30 is dead on for where I'm camping.
Thanks Randy...Oh and those are the WNBA not HS so the light is probably much better than what you're dealing with...
Hey Charles, are you shooting Nikon ?
w/o a flash ?
What SS ?
I think I know the answers but I wanted to be sure.
I am going to try my d50 + 50 1.8 and try 1/250 and some bursts....I've noticed the pro from the local paper is getting by w/ 1/250 @ iso800 and shooting for the 'still moments' by bursting

Randy...yes Nikon...D200 and/or D2X. Mostly a split between iso200 & iso400, generally f2 and 1/640. No flash...the light in Charlotte Arena is actually pretty crappy imo...relatively good at Duke.

Charlotte NC ?
if you can get 1/640 at iso400 the light is great
In last night HS gym (which was much better than last weeks) I needed iso 1600 to get 1/400 at f1.8....i was actually bouncing between 1.8 and 2.2
nice to see someone else shooting w/o a flash, i hate the flash look and i suspect the players don't appreciate it to much either when we are so close

Yes, Charlotte, NC...big difference between arena/college/pros and HS gyms I'd imagine when it comes to lighting. I never use a flash and I'm not sure I'd even use a strobe given the opportunity. I'm sure all the athletes are used to it by now but I just prefer the look of ambient light...I might change that song if I was forced to iso1600 every time tho!

i shot a clt bobcats game from a good seat last year w/ my d50 & 85mm 1.8
the light there is like daylight compared to Independence High School's 50 yr old gym
