I agree, they both are soft and unsharp. The first picture is really a good capture of his/her expression(I love that!) I just wish the eyes were much sharper as I seem to be drawn straight to them. Beautiful choice of color though. The second, I notice how sharp the mom's face is(I can see freckles) but the baby's face is out of focus. I see catchlights and lighting isn't bad at all.:): Thanks for sharing-he is really a cute little guy!

I agree with what has been said, but I would like to add that I think you have a knack for good compositions/crops.

The first looks OOF because of camera shake, check your shutter speed to make sure it was fast enough. The second looks like the focus may have been off. Keep trying and ask any questions you may have.
