my daughter in green loves the nutcracker and every year in ballet she gets closer to playing "clara". But this year she did get to dance with the nutcracker so she was happy. NO cameras were allowed so i had to sneak this picture during the performance.........

ya know what gets me is that before the show the "PRO PHOTOGRAPHER" makes an annoucement that no photographs are allowed. "He" takes his images and sells them later for $12.00 for one 5x7. I say let him make is $$ but why stop me from taking pics of my own daughter...

I understand what the pro is trying to do - though I don't think it's right to try to prohibit parents from shooting "flashless" photos of their kids. He's just trying to protect his corner on a small market or maximize his return on his investment on the time and effort he is expending on photographing the performance.

That being said, I truely don't have ANY heartburn over you getting the shots of your daughter (and a great shot it is!!). Besides, what's the worst that can happen to you. You're not selling your photographs to any and $12 for a 5x7 is just a little over the top.

P.S. - I love the border you have on your photo. Care to share how it was done? Thanks

Troy, that is a fantastic shot.

As for the extortion racket run by the pro - don't worry too much about it. Unless you are told by the organisers or the venue owners before hand and preferably printed on your ticket you are within rights to take photos. He's say so has little meaning.

Sadly this situation is repeated in so many places it is not funny. I have to carry a permit to shoot my own kids at the local ice rink. How ridiculous is that?

    Wonderful capture...a treasure for sure.

I really don't understand why flashless photos are a problem during performances. I just photgraphed a concert at a club and the media could only take photos during the first three songs. However people were using the flash and taking cell phone photos throughout the performance.

Beautiful job! A friend of mine owns a ballet company and I'm shooting their spring recital. Flash photography is not permitted to ANYONE, myself included (which is why I'm ALSO going to dress rehersal) however, that doesn't mean the parents can't take pictures. That's not cool, I mean you pay for her to take ballet and probably for costume rentals and you probably paid for the tickets, right? There shouldn't be any problem with you taking pictures of your daughter. (Not to mention that your shot is probably much better than anything he/she got???)

I went to a Big & Rich concert this summer and while B&R loves for fans to take photos the venue wouldn't allow SLR cameras in the press area. eek7.gifdunno

Before you get all bent out of shape at the pro, why not ask him where his profits go. Does a portion of the sale go back to the dance company? If it does, why not support your daughter and buy a photo.

If the organizer gave him exlusive rights to photograph the event, the announcement is enough. They don't have to put it on tickets, but I would think they would have stopped you at the door and ask you take the camera back to your car. That obviously was no cellphone shot:D .

If you were able to get $12.00 for a 5x7 would you feel as if you were ripping someone off? It seems we (photogs) sometimes are too quick to turn against our own.

And btw....nice shot. thumb.gif Now I'm off to call the photo police.....rolleyes1.gifrolleyes1.gifrolleyes1.gif

    Really great shot!

I don't think $12 for a 5x7 is outrageous. The photographer is not getting paid to shoot and no one has to purchase their photos. They are giving up their time and wear/tear on their equipment hoping people will purchase their shots.

That said, I don't think they should prohibit others taking photos, as long as they say no flash (as it is distracting to the performers and the audience).

Windoze isn't saying that the photographer is wrong or price gouging, but that there shouldn't be a "you can't take pictures of your kid" mentality.

I shoot as OP (Official Photographer) at horse shows and I garuntee people take pictures of family and friends and may take sales away from me, but I'm happy that the people who don't have someone show up buy 4 or 5 pics. Heck even some people who DO have family and friends buy from me. I even had one of the friends asking me about cameras and lenses.

    Windoze,
Just curious what kinda of settings did you use to get such a nice clear/colourful image in the theatre?
