Sand Hill Cranes
Over night the Sand Hills are sometimes frozen in the ice, and they leave in the morning in groups or singles as they thaw at diffrent times. In the process of leaving they present a pretty funny, but graceful departure.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Lisa, I was pleased the last one played right into the script. He actually was the last one to fly and did look very lonely out there on the big lake, but the truth of the matter is that just before take off they all asume that pose, and it really has nothing to do with their ego. I thought, however, because he was the last to leave that he too deserved to have his picture taken like all the others.

Thanks Glenn, I had a wonderful time, and spent quality time with my wife and Pei baby Casper. After shooting we drove to White Sands N.M., which was outstanding, and on to the Petrified Forest and Grand Canyon. A cold and busy week, but very rewarding. The white sand, and the hazy canyon has given me many photo challenges to look forward to.

Thank you Dick, I'm glad you liked the little story about the crane who was left behind, but went on to become leader of the flock.

Thanks EB, but he caught up with the flock in short order. Last time I saw him, he was offering seeds to a cute little female.

Thank you very very much Jeff, I appreciate your compliment. I like my D200, but it has its limitations in low light. I got these images using the 300 w/1.4, aperture priority, 1/1250 @ f8, -1 EV, ISO 200, and no gloves, but boy was it cold. Even with the TC I was very far away so with a large crop I was able to post some fairly decent pictures..... just lucky. Sorry that you didn't do better, but I think you're modest, and have some good shots that you feel are not perfect. Next time will be much better.

Hi Steve, thank you for thinking of me, and thanks for the compliment. You are sooo right, for a Californian it was really cold, and the right word is refreshing. Not only the nice people we met, but the different places we visited was a welcome change. I'm looking forward to more trip around the US.
