I've seen some great deals for them (clones of the BG-E3) on eBay, and welll,
if their just as good and offer the same amount of functions as Canon does .. then ...
OVIEDO DIGITAL has them reasonably priced, just doesnt say *Canon* .. lol
Input please?

speaks about the Opteka .. and the one I'm looking at is made by (or called) a Merkury ..
I assume their one in the same?
I also went thru the above link you sent, and didnt catch this the first time .. but
Ziggy states that the grip will work with just one battery in any tray? Kwel!
Another question is .. Can you still operate the shutter button on the camera?
Or, is it disabled once the grip is attached? Reason I ask is .. I dont really need battery life,
as much as I need comfort when holding the camera vertical .. Most of my work
is done in a vertical format .. and I like using the camera's shutter release ..
Ok .. have I made any sense at all? lol

The Opteka comes with another cartridge that allows you to use double A batteries if you need to.
Yes, you will be able to use both shutter buttons. I leave my switch to ON because I am constantly going horizontal and vertical. Feels very comfortable and bulks the camera up a little.

Regarding the Opteka vesion, the camera shutter button, and all other on-camera buttons and fuctions, are unaffected by the addition of the grip. The grip only adds redundancy to the vertical orientation.
The grip's shutter button does "feel" a little different, but only enought to mention. It works fine for me.
I believe that the different grips are indeed from different manufacturers, but are all close clones to the Canon grip in form and function.

EDIT: .. I've purchased the Merkury battery grip from OVIEDO DIGITAL,
who is right here in Florida. I coulda saved the tax and went elsewhere ..
but ehh, whats 4 bucks when you're already spendin 80 .. lol
Thanks for lookin out folks ..
After reading the reviews on the website, and after the advice of Ziggy and others, I bought this one:

I gotta say that I love it. Makes my XTi much easier to handle.
