I had to make a modeling card for my final assignment for Photo Productions which is my final photo class of my high school career. These are the three photos I used, they're of my friend Nicole, very beautiful girl. Tell me what ya think.

I'm not entirely clear on the concept of a "modeling card", but I can give you my thoughts on the photos:

    Common to all three:
    • I'm not sure about the WB on these, it looks off. Is that your intent?
    • You cut off the top of her head. This is fine for the first one as it's a face shot. Really don't like it in #2 and #3.
    #1
    • The near eye appears very sharp
    • Exposure across her cheeks and nose appears a little (just a little) hot
    • I'm not sure about the intent behind having your model directing her sight so sharply out of the frame.
    • Are her eyes really that free of blood supply. It looks unnatural to me.
    #2
    • Focus appears to be on her left knee, thus her face appears OOF
    • Her expression does not draw me into the photo - your model is looking into the camera, but with almost a look of total boredom.
    • You cut off, IMHO, too much of her left arm.
    #3
    • At this resolution, her face looks nice and sharp
    • Love her expression
    • You have a nice S-curve going here. A little more head tilt might have improved it even more.
    • Her arms are just kind of hanging there - lifeless. Give her hands something to do to bring some more life into to the image.
    • A little more seperation between her arms and her body would have had a dramatic effect on emphasizing her wonderful figure.
    • Again, you cut off a significant portion of her left arm.
    • This might have been an even better image if it had had some more room in which to breath. I think it's cropped a little too tight.

Scott thanks for your detailed advice, I had a little bit of space to work with thats why the crops are so tight, but all of your critques are spot on. I am going to go back and work on these somewhere starting from the RAW photo, thanks :D .

    Anyone else ?

I'm glad to offer what help I can and very happy you took the critic in the spirit it was intended. Just remember, my comments are worth almost what you paid for them.

    Cool assignment.

I book models off of their comp cards... I have stacks and stacks from agencies here. Alot of the work I have shot is used on model comp cards for the girls in NYC for prospective clients and paid jobs.

This is one of the cards I made. What do you think Owen, anything close to what you got laying around ?

Yea there is alot of dead space, I tried going with looser comp when I designed it, I didnt want it to be very tight, I designed another one that I will post later today but for now I gotta go to school.

They are always double sided 5.5x8.5 cards (unless it is show season.)
    Info included:

    Agency (and agency contact info)
    Name
    Height
    Eye Color
    Hair Color
    Bust
    Wait
    Hips
    Dress Size
    Shoe Size

Never weight, because the bust/waist/hips are a better indicator of size.

Usually a headshot/upper body shot on the front
Often a landscape shot on the back, or two vertical body shots.

    HTH.

These are really interesting shots. I find it difficult to comment on fashion shots as many times the processing is a little more "creative" and it is hard to judge what was intended (i.e. the yellow cast) and what was not. Anyway, as individual shots I like the #1 and #3. They really take on a new look on the white background of the card. I'm not sure what a card should look like, but I'm not crazy about the placement of these. Hope you will post your final edit for us. A very neat assignment! :D

    Hi, lluminati919
    Nicole is a beautiful girl.
These are nice photos and I like how you angled them in the comp card.
I don't like how you cropped out the arm.
You might want to try one with the photo of the eyes looking up to be on the bottom like she is looking up at the other photos.

    Good Luck,

Attractive model, no doubt. Did you "jazz" up the eyes a bit? The whites seem bleach white, almost spooky.

Ok so this is one with no PS in the eyes, none. What do you think, slightly adjust white balance to the cooler side.

The first shot after it is touched up is working for me. Love the shallow DOF, however you went a little to far and her left eye isn't in focus. Love the angle and comp. Do not like how her eyes are darting to the top of the frame.Card looks good!

I think the color works well. Works well with the hair and skin tone.
One thing I seem to be missing is shadow detail.

What you going to do after HS?

I edited the eyes in the first photo I posted but the 2nd that I posted had no PS, not even sharpening. Two flashes bouncing off off the ceiling with diffusers is all.
