New lens! New Shots! (Lots of photos)
Just picked up an EF 400mm f/5.6 L
Having way too much fun and wanted to share the joy:
Surprisingly (to me anyway as I was worried about camera shake with no IS) these are all handheld...go figure.
The deer shots were at ISO 1600 and was pretty dark in the woods but thought they turned out well:
A one rack buck
A large Bambi
Mr. Possum
Japanese style taken with the 400mm
Waterfall comp
Juvenile bald eagle
In flight
Heh, not a Mallard
Thanks for looking :lust

Hey there Swartzy, yes I can see you are having an absolute ball with your new Lens...... I also have that same lens and I love it too
It's much lighter to carry than the Canon 70-200mm that's for sure.
You got some really nice shots here, love that cute little Possum, you got a good assortment in this lot Swartzy ....... Skippy

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
No noise for ISO 1600, must be canon
even the merganser...
the 400 f/5.6 is a terrific lens and will even work with a tc if you tape the pins - but the lens itself is very sharp and fast to focus - congrats --you will enjoy it...

Congrats on new lens!!
Great shots! Very sharp! I'm impressed: 400mm, no IS, handheld... Of course, ISO1600 helps, but still... Mr. Iron Hand you...:-)
Yesssssss. That lens is great. It is a bit heavy but will get a monopod fairly soon (Santa are you listening?) which will help. Using center focus, AI Servo, high shutter speeds (with lowest ISO possible and f stop around 5.6 to 8) seems like a great combination. The animal shots were all wide open (f/5.6) to give you an idea just how sharp that lens is...amazing. Finding that the keepers now are way better quality than that of my 70-300. The bokeh on this also is beautiful.
Thanks for all the kind words and support. I'm finally living my passion.
