The only major difference between these two photo's is the flash didn't fire. But I don't see how by having no flash the shot would go this noisey

this time with the flash

That (for my money anyway) is a very typical result of an under exposed image. Your exif says it isnt though. Sure its the same exposure on both shots ?

Cheers for looking Gus, here's the exif from the first shot

    Date Taken:2006-12-24 21:54:51Date Digitized:2006-12-24 21:54:51Date Modified:2006-12-26 16:29:04Make:CanonModel: Canon EOS 20D Size: 3504x2336 Bytes: 8401975 Aperture: f/3.5 ISO: 400 Focal Length: 10mm Exposure Time: 0.005s (1/200)Flash:Flash did not fire, compulsory flash modeExposure Program:Shutter priorityExposure Bias:0ExposureMode:0White Balance:auto

I ended up with a few shots that had alot of noise (not to this extent) but it had me thinking that there's something gone wrong with the camera
Shouldn't it have just been really dark? its not on a scene mode making it's own judgements, just shutter priority. So i'm a little confused as to me it looks like it tried to 'gain up' the shot to get some detail.
This is my first proper go at using raw and I'm a little befuddled headscratch.gif

Did you up the exposure in post? You have the same shutter/aperture on both shots, and the one with the flash is pretty good. So the one without the flash should be pretty underexposed I think.

its had very little post work to get a better idea of what happened.
is it possible ACR did the massive gain up?

don't bother replying, my bad, auto exposure etc in ACR did all the damage!
guess this is just the beginnings of fun and games with learning how to work with RAW

You picture is definitely underexposed. Judging both images, there is no way that 1/200th of a second @400 ISO will be enough to capture a correct exposure without the flash for that situation.

Adobe ACR (in its default settings) will automatically try to adjust the RAW images. If you hit Command-U on the Mac or Control? - U on a PC, I bet that you'll see the histogram values dramatically move to the LEFT. Command-U (Mac) toggles the automatic adjustments ON or OFF.

    HTH,
