I visited this Oregon beach last spring. There wasn't anything interesting on this flat beach with no rocks around - then I discovered these wave-foam bubbles with amazing colors.

Lots of hands&knees time, and I got wet from a sneaker - hard to keep an eye on my work and the waves at the same time.

I've never seen anything like it before or since, but the next time I'm in that area, I'm gonna look!

Canon 100mm macro - hand held & braced on the sand. Had to use fast shutter speed to stop the color patterns, which were constantly moving around - I guess from the breeze.

Comments Welcome!

Down & Dirty is what happens to you when you buy a macro lens! It's kind of like "rolling on ground laughing" rolleyes1.gif (Except sometimes it's cussing :-)

Dee, when you saw this phenomenon, were the colors intense like this?

Hi, Skippy! Is "threw up" a forensic term? :D Looks like your location in Aussie land is "just across the street" from Tasmania - does it get icy there from time to time?

Usually, this effect is a result of an iridescent oil coating, although detergents and other natural coatings provide a similar experience.

A similar property was exploited to provide the earliest large-screen television projection systems:

    Great images.

Well, at least now I sort of know what an Eidophor is (was?). From the Wikipedia description, I couldn't quite get how an electron beam through a spinning oil thingy enabled picture projection. headscratch.gif But thanks for trying to "enlighten" me!
