metering

I have a canon rebelxt when do you us center weight, and evaluative metering? I use the partial (spot) for portrait but I do not understand when to use the center weight or the evaluative...magic widget
(2) Canon 20d, (1) canon 30d, 70-200is 2.8, tamron 17-50,canon 50mm 1.4

    I think it really comes down to understanding how each metering mode works and adjusting from there via the histogram.

    As a practical matter, I meter with Evaluative Metering at all times.

    I very occaisionally use spot metering if I am shooting with long teles and have a specific reason.

    I know from experience how much + or - Exposure Compensation I plan to dial in for most back lit shots, and I understand that metering snow fields or coal piles WILL require a change in exposure different than a straight metered reading.

    Sunny 16 is a good subject to understand when shooting oout of doors also.
