Bolsa Chica Revisited
Got a chance to go back to Bolsa Chica for a walk with the family and of course had to bring along my gear. With the construction and renovation all done it's all that much more pleasant to walk through the wetlands.
The egrets were in full swing and I got to get pretty close to this pelican:

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
The egrets were a real challenge to expose with the strong harsh lighting. I worked in manual exposure the whole time and severly underexposed the backgrounds to keep the highlights from blowing up. I was able to bring the background up and fill-in the shadows in post-processing.
I highly recommend visiting Bolsa Chica. I can say it's better now than I've ever seen it.

Thanks Dick! Hey...what do you mean by "heavy on exposure"?

There were some white pelicans out there also but they weren't close enough for me to get anything good. I have to go back and see if I get another chance!
It's amazing what a difference in equipment can make to the overall technical quality of a photograph. I took a similar shot a couple of years ago but with a lower quality lens and camera and the difference is stunning. Composition and lighting were similar but the details, sharpness, and clarity of the new one are excellent.
Yes, it's the photographer not the camera that will take great pictures but...good equipment helps!
