    i think somewhere inbetween would be better, the first one is flat, and just pulling down the black levels would fix that.

    could try this in photoshop
    • Duplicate the image onto a new layer
    • Pull down black slider to remove flatness
    • Set layer blending mode to luminosity
    this would keep the correct saturations and stuff, but remove the flat colours.

    i hope i remembered the blending mode rightly
