why do the guys with those big ones always want to be up front ??
Just be glad he's not behind you.

Yeah but. You hear "Is that a camera?", "How big is that lens?", "Can I look
too?" and my favorite "I bet that's a really expensive camera.". Of course
there's always the old standby "How far can you see with that?".
Today, I was out on the boardwalk watching workers on a high voltage
transmission tower when a couple and their small children came to look
at the marsh. Dad and I spoke for a couple of minutes and I let him look
at the guys working. He was pretty impressed and was explaining to his
daughter (all of about 2.5 yrs) what was happening--all he was getting
was the blank stare. So I asked if she'd like to see too--that was too
cool. Once she saw what was happening, she smiled. Made my day.

this is really true! I also remember that someone asked my friend, who was carrying a long prime lens, a 300mm f/4 if I'm not mistaken, and he was asked "how much zoom" his camera had! :-)

Heh, that's a pretty cool story! It was so nice of you to offer her a peek at the scene... Although... I'm not that sure, she might get some serious lens lust! ;-)
I'm new here, but noticed in several posts the word Nikon shows up in bold red letters. I'm guessing many of you guys are not Nikon fans, but I'm actually torn between buying a Nikon D70 and a Canon 20D (I'd love to get the Canon over the Nikon, but price wise the Nikon is more affordable...well, to start out with, that is, !).
Hmmm...don't you love the way I keep writing the word Nikon in this note? Just wanna see if it turns red, OOOL!!!!

Shot with what ya' got (or want). We take all comers But to make me see RED, you have to diddle the font color... Though it might happen automatically if you type something like "16-35 f2.8 L ". But only if you're a Canon fan

It doen't mater what brand camera you have. You state: "but price wise the Nikon is more affordable...well, to start out with" Be advised, the cost of the camera no mater what you may believe now is the cheapest thing you will buy. Research the brands and buy the brand you think will best meet your needs over the long haul. Remember your buying into a system, not buying a camera. Once you start buying lens and accessories, and you will, it gets real hard and expense to switch later.
I have noticed that you have naughty mind shame on you [i was careful ]
I'm quite sure I don't know what you mean. Did you get some sort of perverse meaning out of my statement?

It may just be a coincidence, but if you do a search on the word "Nikon", every instance in the results will show up in red. Do you think that might have happened?

I am going to look up perverse I know why nixon is always in red !After you buy one or two lens your are in the red big time

Holey Moley, do I feel like a total ninny, ! You got me pegged...I DID do a search for Nikon...doh!!! Silly me to not think that might be the reason why (and I'm not even a blonde, !).
I've been trying to compare both camera's pros and cons before making a final decision. There are good and some not so good points to both. I prefer the look of the Canon images (Nikon's seem more "clinical", Canon's more "artistic" because of the way the cameras collect and process the image information, I think). In my hand, I preferred the Nikon over the Canon..the buttons all seemed to be in the right place for my smaller female hands. I didn't like Canon's metering system as much as Nikon's, but feature wise, it was no slouch. I didn't like Nikon's handling of color...some colors were washed out, but the reds were exploding all over the place (thanks to Sony being the manufacturer of the Nikon sensor, I think...and I know all about Sony's quirky color issues, !)
I'm really torn...I LOVE the almost utter lack of visible noise with the Canon and the fact that it has some accessories that would come in really handy for me...such as the angle eyepiece attachment (getting on my belly for a low angle shot is just not in my vocabulary any more!). I also like the fact that the Canon kit lens thread size is 58mm like my Sony 828, so my filters will all fit nicely. I'll admit I wasn't that impressed with the Canon kit lens though...I think Nikon's kit lens might have the edge in that department.
Well, the struggle goes on...at this point, I'm tempted to just give up and go buy a fun pocket sized point and shoot for the heck of it, O!

No worries, Nee. I'm sure we've all done that at one point or another.

Both lines are excellent. You really can't make a mistake, but I understand your dilemma, as I was there too. I spent weeks/months debating between a 10D and a D100. The final decision pretty much was made when I had both cameras on a counter, side-by-side, and I picked them up and started shooting in the store. It was obvious that when I grabbed the D100, I mashed buttons and my thumb rested on a dial. When I grabbed the 10D, it just felt right. I was also mesmerized by the silent USM lens
And then there's the Baldy factor, but I won't go there.
As far as image quality, it's very subjective and while I think you're correct, in that the Canon CMOS produces a very silky smooth image, the Nikon is no slouch and in most cases, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between two images posted side-by-side, all things being equal.
Go with your gut, your heart, and stop over-analyzing.
Lastly, don't worry about the kit lenses...they are both adequate, but neither hold a candle to the better lenses in Canon and Nikon's arsenals. As someone else likes to say...buy the system, not the camera.
Just my $0.02 worth, IMHO, and YMMV.

Thanks!
My head, heart and gut don't seem to be in agreement. I'm gonna hold off until they are so I don't have any regrets on my purchase. I've got a reasonably good top of the line consumer camera now, though I'm not totally in love with it, !
But I would like to have something better by the time the Yosemite shoot out happens in May...
Who knows, maybe something with even more bells and whistles and a great price will come along before then
But if not, I'm sure either one of the 2 cams I'm considering will do quite nicely, !
